Phil Harris of 'Deadliest Catch' Dies

Phil Harris'Deadliest Catch' captain Phil Harris died Tuesday about a week after suffering a stroke on Alaska's St. Paul Island.

The news was announced in a statement released by Harris' sons, Jake and Josh, according to the Live Feed.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris," it said. "Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Discovery also released the following statement:

"Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew."

As of last week, Harris was said to be recovering from his stoke, which was first reported on Jan. 30; by Saturday, he was talking again, according to his colleague, Morgan.

"Capt. Phil was talking to friends and family today; showing his greatest progress since he suffered a massive stroke one week ago. It's been a long and difficult week for friends and family as Phil was medivaced from St. Paul Island and under went surgery," she wrote, according to EW.com.

Harris appeared on over 50 episodes of 'Deadliest Catch' as captain of the Cornelia Marie.
