Review: '24' - '10:00PM - 11:00PM'

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 9th 2010 3:54AM
24, season 8, episode 7
(S08E07) I'm going to whine a lot about this episode, so that's just a little warning to anyone absolutely loving this season of '24.' But first, let's talk about the great scene where Renee goes ballistic, stabs Vladimir, then accidentally stabs Jack. Then Jack takes the knife out and hurls it at the other guy coming in the door. Awesome!

Ok, now for the bad stuff. For one thing, I thought we were going to get to see Renee kick some major butt this season. So far, she's just a wimpy female with a big fat vengeance chip on her shoulder who still gets knocked around by the bad guys (excepting that awesome scene noted above). Come on, Renee! I want a female Jack Bauer, not some sniveling sap!

The WTF aspects of '24' these days are just too WTF to ignore. Why don't we take them one by one:

WTF #1. I know Jack is a badass who can take any sort of torture and spring back to life, but that was no small knife wound he got in his mid-section. Yet he's able to bandage himself, jump back up, talk some sense into Renee, and give himself over to the bad guys so the deal isn't all for naught. I know it's '24,' but ... I don't think so.

WTF #2.
I mentioned last week that it seemed unrealistic that Dana would be able to secure access codes for a warehouse that's housing a LOT of stuff, as we saw in this episode, in such a short time. Not to mention the fact that she's working for the FBI, so wouldn't they have done a teensy bit better background check on her? And given that there IS so much stuff in the warehouse, doesn't it seem like they'd have someone on permanent security duty there, rather than just a cop wandering through every now and then to check on things? Or at the very least, someone monitoring the security cameras 24/7?

WTF #3. Let's stick with the warehouse, since it's so craptastically WTF. Did Dana really think the guys wouldn't take more than just the $120K? They're clearly lacking in judgment, given their history, so she'd have to be a numbskull to think they wouldn't be stuffing multiple duffel bags with whatever they could get their hands on.

WTF #4. And are the guys so stupid that they wouldn't think to wear gloves? Their fingerprints are all over that place! It's like they're hooligans robbing a drugstore or something.

WTF #5.
Did Bazhaev really say he wanted Oleg buried "out back"? I didn't run the DVR back, so you can tell me if I've got that right. Seriously, it's like he's burying his pet goldfish in the backyard or something. Not only that, but to tell Josef that his goal with the nuclear deal is to leave him and his family with a wealthy inheritance and respect? Really? How about get a good job and open a 401K? That works, too.

WTF #6. Why, oh why must the Russians always be the bad guys? Are there no good Russians in the world? Just once, I'd like to see somebody switch it up and make the Russians the good guys.

WTF #7. The President's peace treaty. Eh, just WTF. I don't even know what to say about this because the storyline is so nothing. Back in the good old days of '24,' all the storylines had equal value, and each thing hinged together beautifully like a big house of cards ready to topple over. Not so this season.

WTF #8.
Hassan's idea to have Jamot's family "detained." Who are we kidding? There's going to be torture involved. So this guy who seemingly has been an upright person so far suddenly has a change of heart and goes all rogue and evil?

A couple more things:

I burst out laughing when Jack said to Renee, "I know what he did to you six years ago, and it IS a big deal," then he put on his nerd glasses. The timing with the glasses just seemed really funny, for some reason.

I'm really liking Freddie Prinze, Jr. and wishing we saw more of him. If '24' implodes after this season, he definitely needs his own crime-thriller TV show.

Ok, your turn. Please tell me some good things you saw in this episode, other than Jack's knife-hurling moment. I know they're in there somewhere. For more reasons why '24' just isn't getting it this season, check out Allison's post.

I feel so bad what has happened to 24. I just think the focus on Renee being the female Jack is insane. She's one of the weakest characters ever on the show. She's a mental case. Stay away Jack! The whole Dana thing is a joke. It was the best show on TV. Focus on Jack!! stop making it a soap!

24 can be sometimes entertaining but suspension of disbelief in this season is becoming painfully difficult. I agree with all of your WTF's but one, #5. While I grant you that the bar has been set extremely low across the TV landscape, but this bunch of Russian thugs are actually exhibiting some rational behavior in going to extremes to conceal their dealings and doing so with a bit of ingenuity (e.g. smuggling Jack out unnoticed just in case the place is watched).

I concur with a previous poster... FIRE BRANNON BRAGA NOW... The minute he became involved with this show it went downhill.. THIS SEASON he is the fricking EXECUTIVE PRODUCER... and pretty much to blame for this show divebombing so maddeningly... To the people who say if you don't like it don't watch, I say nee.. I LOVE 24... If it is sucking, it's because the writers suck.. SO FIRE THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER and I can have my 24 back!!

OMG, this site has become such a whiners and complainers section. If the show is so bad and frustrating, then tune out. Simple.
I still like the show. Yes, it doesn't have the excitement and tension as previous seasons but it is not a new show! How much can be reinvented? The Dana thing is annoying- when she gets busted it will all be worth it.
Jane, the Russians happen to trade heavily in arms and nuclear weapons, so quit whining about them being the bad guys. Maybe they should have used Hawaiians, eh?
The exchange could happen at a luau- there, do you feel better?

I'm done with "24." Each season gets dumber and dumber. After almost 9 years, that's it . . . not only is it politically stupid, but the dialogue is really getting to be grating.

Renee's freakout scene was clearly the best part of the episode, which was on balance pretty good overall. Have to agree with previous commenters that Starbuck disappearing at inconvenient times with her cellphone should be raising lots of red flags at CTU. http://whatjohnswatching.com/2010/02/08/liveblogging-24-10-to-11pm/

So far this season has been a disappointment. Jack it seems, is hardly even seen throughout the episodes. So much time is spent on the smaller side stories that he seems to get lost in the shuffle. I know its 24 and early on it takes a little while to get everything rolling, but it just seems so slow and drawn out. It's almost as if Fox and the producers are testing out how 24 would do without Jack Bauer. The Dana story is so implausible and it doesnt seem to have any real ties to anything else going on. The final 10 minutes of last nights episode with Renee going Manson on Vladimir and Jack being Jack was definately a push in the right direction. Jack's plan was also brilliant, but then the Keystone Cops of CTU are once again clueless. This season needs to get moving quick or we may be witnessing a very pathetic ending to one of TV's best and most innovative shows.

I've watched all the seasons of 24 and this is the first time I've thought about finding something else to watch at the 9 o'clock hour. This was the weakest episode I can recall. The characters that have been created for this years show suck. Why have the female characters (Dana and Renee) been characterized as abused woman.

How can CTU be run so poorly that Dana can walk in and out of the front door during a crisis, jump on her cell phone for personal business and go hide when she is supposed to be in a meeting. You'd think she was working in the head quarters of the Buy More instead of a highly secure intelligence hub.

This year all I can say about 24 so far is that this is the worse start to a season I've ever seen.

Snark snark snark
Someone at CTU needs to take away Dana's cell phone. If I got up from my desk to make calls like that I would be fired.
Snark Snark Snark
This day is a waste of Julian Sark.
Snark Snark Snark
Can Dana's "friends" please just get away with everything they just did? That way the storyline can just be dropped for the rest of the day, no more of it wasting our time.
Snark Snark Snark
Its been a while since we've seen Slumdog President's brother. Is he still having sex with the hookers? It's been two fracking hours that little guy can't go that long!
Snark Snark Snark. This season sucks.

However it was saved by 30 seconds of pure awesomeness thanks to Renee snapping and Jack pulling a knife out of his stomach and throwing it into a guy's neck. The show needs to get more interesting quick. Now you don't always need more action to make an engaging plot, but the 24 people have proved this season that beyond blowing shit up their writing isn't that interesting. So either start with the action or find the people that wrote season 1. They could make an engaging plot without over the top booms and bangs at least.

After the craptacular S6, anything they do is better. This episode is no exception. There maybe be tons of WTF, but as a 24 fan, I'm pretty used to them by now. And again still better than S6. What a terrible, terrible season.
