Review: 'The Big Bang Theory' - 'The Large Hadron Collision'

'The Big Bang Theory' - 'The Hadron Collision'(S03E15) I'm pinch-hitting for Kona this week due to technical difficulties at the Gallagher homestead. Not sure if I can be the quote machine she is, but you can always add your favorite quotes from the episode into the comments.

You know, I've never been one to take Sheldon's side a lot of the time. As much as I love the character and how Jim Parsons plays him, the fact that a guy who's such a pill can have four people in his life who like him and tolerate his weird, Aspberger-like selfishness should be enough for me to connect to as a viewer. Most of the time, when Sheldon is wreaking havoc over his friends' lives, I'm usually feeling bad for whoever it is -- usually Leonard -- that's getting the brunt of Sheldon's utter Sheldonness.

But this week, I was on Team Sheldon. Why? Because Leonard knows Sheldon would appreciate a trip to the CERN super collider a whole lot more than Penny would, even if the lure of Penny in a snow bunny outfit is a strong one to resist.

Forget the ever-present Roommate Agreement for a second. Sheldon's a physicist. To him, the CERN super collider is akin to a baseball fan visiting Wrigley Field; a near-religious experience that may just give a person new insight. For Leonard to deny him that just because it's Valentine's Day and he wants to get laid is kinda douchey on Leonard's part, image of Snow Penny notwithstanding.

Still, it was fun to see some real emotions out of Sheldon for a change, as he rocketed from jealousy and feelings of betrayal -- he actually compared Leonard to Darth Vader, and gave him 30 pieces of silver(ware) to indicate how much of a traitor he thought Leonard was -- to craven obsequiousness -- complete with Frodo-shaped pancakes -- to genuine happiness when Penny said she'd talk to Leonard about the trip. When was the last time Leonard hugged anyone? The funniest moment of the night was when he said he was looking to Penny for guidance on when to stop hugging.

The only moment where Sheldon was being pure in his condescension was when he showed Penny the PowerPoint on why he should go to Switzerland instead of her. Though, when it comes right down to it, where is Penny going to have the better time? A super collider or Bath and Body Works?

Anyway, Sheldon really paid for his momentary lapse of personal space maintenance, didn't he? And Raj ended up being the winner. One day ol' Raj will be able to talk to a woman without having alcohol in his system. But until then, he's going to be planning a lot of "me days" on February 14.

Add me to the big list of Team Leonard here
it was more than just the collider, Leonard was taking his girlfriend to switzerland to ski and for romance, it is Valentine's day. Trumps it all, again Sheldon could have bought his own flight ticket and hotel room and went to see the colider with Leonard but Leonard was right to take Penny as his guest to Switzerland..
Sheldon was the douche in this episode becasue he admitted he knew he was being manipulative, this wasn't him doing stuff and not understanding it was wrong

I, too, thought "both Penny and Sheldon could go", though one would have to pay for the airfare/hotel. When Penny got sick at the end and Leonard told Sheldon he could go, I thought "hah!, where are they going to find a plane ticket that last minute?"

I was on Sheldon's side - he and Leonard already had an agreement. True, many of the stipulations in the roommate agreement are absurd, but this one was not. I could see that Penny might be upset that she would have to spend Valentine's Day alone, but I think she would understand that Leonard had to work (albeit in Switzerland) on V-Day.

This show is great! It is consistent, and is showing all the characters as growing. Sheldon is not a spoiled brat - he acts like one - but because he doesn't even realize what he's doing, he is not one. That's what his friends realize. That is why they put up with it. They realize, as much of a pain as it is, it's Sheldon, and he can't be any different. We each have friends who drive us crazy, but they're our friends. I'm sure we drive our friends crazy too! lol Loved the ending with Raj and Leonard, too cute.

I was with Leonard the whole way. But i at least understood Sheldon in this episode.

This ep brought up the age old question for every guy. Do you hang out with the best friend or the girlfriend. Leonard made his choice and props to him for standing by it. And of course Sheldon was upset. any body would be. But Leonard had it right when he said he wouldn't even take Sheldon if Penny said no. He was acting like a kid. And every time the gang just gives in to his childish ways, just reinforces that behavior.

I'm on Team Leonard. I had a lot of respect for him for putting his foot down. Sheldon, hilarious as he may be, is a terrible friend. And not only that but he's a bit of a hypocrite. For as much as he brags about his genius when push came to shove he didn't try to outsmart Leonard, he didn't try to actually work for the prize of going to Switzerland. He used every trick in the book including going behind Leonards back and trying to emotionally blackmail him. Repeatdly.

I have never cheered so much for Leonard as when he said that he would even prefer to go alone than to take Sheldon with him. For once he was acting like a person dealing with the problem that is Sheldon instead of living in denial. Sheldon is a spoiled brat and if he wants to get to Switzerland so bad why not work for it instead of using Leonard as a crutch like he always has.

I'm on Team Sheldon on this one. Seriously, Sheldon has always wanted to the CERN super-collider, it means the world to him, while Penny would probably have been happy going anywhere as long as it was with Leonard. For Sheldon, this was important. And, it's not like Leonard and Penny can't have a trip together any other day, why does it have to be Valentine's Day? Is it a rule to love your partner more just because it's Valentine's Day? That's just stupid.

Still, my favorite part of the episode was Leonard taking Raj in the end. It was the perfect comeuppence for Leonard being a douche the entire episode. It's not that he wouldn't take Sheldon, it's that he wouldn't even consider his feelings in the matter. He never stopped to think of any alternative, he was just set on taking Penny. I really hate Leonard this episode, though I loved it when Raj said he would never forget this trip when he walked into the Valentine's decorated room (I do feel really bad for Sheldon, since he had to stay home, sick, with Penny unable to sing Soft Kitty).

Agree with Hi Bye on all counts. Cute episode. How about the now much used CSI slow-mo thinking back moment when Sheldon realizes it was Penny spreading, so to speak, the
cold germs during the hug.
Penny remains the sweetest, and most patient, females on comedy series. This one especially needs that antidote!

Yup, Martin is right. It's Valentines day, that trumps everything. As a guy you will never hear the end of it for the rest of your life if you miss a Valentines day.
