Susan Sarandon May Star in Big Screen 'Big Valley'

The Big ValleyI'm never quite sure what to make of big screen versions of TV shows. Sometimes they work ('The Brady Bunch,' 'Mission: Impossible'), but more often they don't (too many to list here), because it's as if a show's plot or theme is necessarily great, it's the actors that were in the show and the time when the show aired. You can't recreate that with a big name star and some "nostalgia" factor.

The latest show to get that big screen treatment is 'The Big Valley,' the western that aired on ABC in the mid-60s. It starred Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Long, Linda Evans, and Lee Majors. Kate Edelman Johnson, daughter of show co-creator Louis, is planning to do a movie based on the show and The Hollywood Reporter reports that Sarandon is in talks to play Victoria Barkley, the role Stanwyck played in the show.

If there is a 'Big Valley' movie and she does star in it, then she has to be credited on screen as MISS Susan Sarandon.

Um...why not Linda Evans for Victoria Barkley (Stanwyks part)?....theres the nostalgia hook. I think she could do it too.

Lee Majors, so sexy as Heath Barkley in the original series, is already cast in the cameo role of Tom Barkley which is fantastic. I'm really looking forward to the film version and I hope it is a sumptuous looking as the original series. Susan Sarandon is great casting.

You forgot to mention Peter Breck. He played the hot headed older brother Nick Barkley. I remember watching reruns of this show as a kid. I'm not sure if reruns are still being aired.

This show was good for its time but I think the move will have the same fate as the "Dallas" movie...categorized as "in development". Another way of saying that it's never going to be made. But it will be interesting to see who will be cast as the Barker kids. Here's some possibilities...

Bradley Cooper as the bastard son Heath Barkley

Reese Witherspoon as Laura Barker

Matthew McConaughey as hot headed, "kick ass and ask questions later" Nick Barker

Drawing a blank on who could portray the book smart lawyer son Jarrod Barkley.

It doesn't appear to be on their schedule right now, but Big Valley has recently been in the rotation of classic shows on Encore Westerns.

I'm drawing a blank on Jarrod too, but that's partially due to being a fan of Richard Long in general. Hard to think of anyone who could replace him.
