According to The Hollywood Reporter, Winslet, who two years ago graced the screen with her Academy Award-winning performance in 'The Reader,' is once again turning to the written word for inspiration and will next take on the title role in the novel adaptation 'Mildred Pierce,' which has been picked up by HBO after months of rumors and negotiations.

'Mildred Pierce' tells the story of a woman who attempts to make a better life for herself and her daughters by leaving the comfort of a failed marriage and becoming a career woman instead, an effort that brings her professional success but personal tragedy. James Cain's 1941 noir novel was previously adapted as a feature film in 1945, which landed headliner Joan Crawford the Best Actress Oscar.

For HBO, however, writer/director Todd Haynes ('I'm Not There,' 'Far From Heaven') will be crafting a five-hour mini-series from the work, which marks a rare foray into the world of television for Winslet. Since beginning her career in British TV, the 'Titanic' star has focused on feature films, only surfacing on the small screen in voiceover work or in cameos as herself, such as on HBO's Ricky Gervais vehicle 'Extras.'

But the cable giant's success with 'Grey Gardens' last year may have altered the landscape. That exclusive film, which starred box office stalwarts Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange, netted an astonishing 17 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actress nods for both Barrymore and Lange, who took home the award.

Whether or not Winslet will follow in their footsteps remains to be seen, but given the pedigrees involved, we think she might as well start picking out her dress for the award ceremony.

'Mildred Pierce' is scheduled to begin filming in April.
