Tracy Morgan and Stevie Wonder Play Punch Dub

by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 14th 2010 9:44AM
VW_logo_blue_silverThere was a commercial for Volkswagen that aired during Super Bowl Sunday last week, but it didn't make Kona's best of the best. Still, having seen it a couple of time since, perhaps it should have been. Do you remember it? It's based on a game called punch dub, and every time a person sees a Volkswagen before the other person, they get to punch their partner and call out the color of the car.

I had some friends who played a car game like this, punching each other each time one saw a vehicle with one light not working. They called it pediddle. Ridiculous name, but then punch dub is just as silly. But it's real. And that's a big part of why this commercial is so good. You can relate to it. Everyone can play. There's the kid with his grandfather. The two Amish folk. The drunk guys in the limo.

If you haven't seen it yet, take a look... and watch till the very, very end for the celebrity appearance of '30 Rock's' Tracy Morgan and superstar Stevie Wonder. This capper makes this commercial practically perfect. Watch:

How funny is that? "How'd you do that?" How indeed. There's something very scatological about Stevie Wonder besting Tracy Morgan at identifying VWs -- by color yet! Then there's the fact that Stevie is in on the joke and has fun with it, even though he's blind and always has been. Tracy even exacerbates the joke by waving his hand in front of Stevie's face.

Great, great commercial. Not just because it's funny, but because it's been drummed into my head that it's a VW commercial and punch dub is forever associated with that silly game now.

It's Punch Bug in PA

You punch them in the shoulder and call out the color along with "No punch back". If you forget the "no punch back" part...you guessed it they can punch you back.

Punch "Dub" sounds stupid to me but I get the theory behind it although I never heard anyone in the US ever call it a "Vee dub"

Definitely geographical. In Jersey it is Punch Bug and no color just punch. Oh and we have soda and sub's not hero's and pop.

Punch buggy

Maybe this is a geographical thing, like pop/soda

In the DC area we called it Punch Buggy (no return) and it was only for te VW bug. We still play today - minus the punches!

In Baltimore it was 'punch buggy' only for beetles. I only learned of it when my neice or nephew hauled off and punched me hard when they saw one. I told them if they EVER hit me again like that I would hit them so hard it would make their head spin. It never happened again! Stupid game!!!!!!

We played "pediddle," except it was only when there was a boy and a girl in the car, and whoever didn't spot it owed a kiss to the one who did. So basically, they both won.

We also did "slug bug." No calling out car colors, just the punch.

To quote Princess Bride, "I do not think [scatological] means what you think it means."

And yes, it's not "punch dub", no matter how much VW wants to make it so. It's "Punch Buggy" and only for VW Bugs. Two for convertible Bugs.

We always called it "Slug Bug". I've never, ever heard anyone call it "Punch Dub".

Who the hell calls it punch dub?

PUNCH BUG. Cause when you see a VW BUG, you punch someone.

Punch bug. That said it's clever of VW to revive it as all VWs and as a call back to the Gen X and Gen Yers who buy now and are the main consumers of VWs.
