Only yesterday, the word began circulating that David Canary was leaving 'All My Children,' exiting the soap after 27 years. He was saying goodbye to the dual role of Adam and Stuart Chandler, a part that had been very good to him, earning him five Daytime Emmy awards. Today, ABC sent out a press release and issued the official story. David Canary was decided to retire from 'All My Children.' He will stop shooting in March, but will still be seen on the show through April 2010. And with David's departure, the character of Adam Chandler will be checking out, too. There will be a power struggle in Chandler Industries caused by his absence, likely with JR, Scott and Annie going at it.
David Canary had this to say about retiring: "My career on 'All My Children' has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally. I have cherished each and every moment. I would like to thank all the fans who have tuned in throughout the years. Their love and support has meant the world to me. I truly feel that I will leave the show in great hands. Viewers will be happy with how Adam departs the canvas, and I know that leaving JR as head of the Chandler household will continue to provide the show with many great stories to come."
'All My Children' loses a lot without Adam Chandler on the scene. He was as important a character as Erica Kane, and even more powerful in many ways because he was so malevolent and controlling. The other side of Adam, though, was his twin brother Stuart. This past year saw the most dramatic story arc ever for the Chandlers when Adam inadvertently shot Stuart and killed him.
If you never saw David Canary in action, watch this clip from a recent episode. It's just a sample of how brilliant he has been through the years:
Fortunately, April won't the be last we see of David Canary on 'All My Children.' He said,"This is not the last you've seen of Adam Chandler. I will be back to check up on the Chandler Clan."
