by Michael Maloney, posted Feb 17th 2010 3:30PM
David CanaryABC has officially confirmed what many soap opera fans have been speculating for months: Fan favorite David Canary ('All My Children') is retiring.

The actor will continue to appear on the show through the end of April, setting up for a major power struggle within the Chandler household.

"My career on 'All My Children' has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally," Canary said in a statement.

Luckily, Canary's retirement won't mean the final end to Adam. "I will be back to check up on the Chandler clan," he added.

Without Adam appearing on a regular basis, 'AMC' will have to find someone with the combined evil of JR Ewing, Hannibal Lecter and Simon Bar Sinister to fill the void. Canary, who started on the show in 1984, won Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in 1986, 1988, 1989, 1993 and 2001,making him one of soaps' most celebrated actors.

Here's a look back at five of Canary's most memorable moments on daytime TV:

1. Kidnapping Erica Kane.
Adam didn't just kidnap Erica soon after arriving in Pine Valley, he coerced his twin brother, Stuart, into pretending to be Adam in a wild attempt to throw Jeremy off the track. Meanwhile, Erica had to face down a grizzly bear in the woods. No offense to Adam, but we got the feeling that when Erika used the words "disgusting beast," she wasn't just referring to the wild animal.

2. Driving Dixie insane.
Picking on Erica was at least a fair fight for Adam, given her constant scheming. But Adam showed his truly wicked side when he tried to send his young bride Dixie over the edge so he could get custody of their son, Adam, Jr. (JR). Years later, Dixie got even when her spirit visited Adam and urged him to do the right thing with another of Dixie's kids. (Check out clip number four to see if Adam came clean.)

3. Playing Adam.
The writers at 'AMC' came up with multiple ways to showcase Canary's immense talent, including a few tongue-in-cheek moments, in which Adam would play Stuart pretending to be Adam and vice versa. He stepped up to the plate time after time, and earned more Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor than any other performer. Canary's speeches were always heartfelt, humble, concise and classy. Below is his acceptance from 2001:

4. Lying about kids.
Adam took the title 'All My Children' a bit literally by trying to make nearly every child in Pine Valley his own. In addition to his obsession with JR, Adam tried to run daughter Hayley's life more than once, kept Gloria captive (which resulted in the death of their daughter, Anna Claire), planned to sell Krystal's kidnapped baby and lied for months about "Kathy" actually being Kate, Tad and Dixie's daughter. But just when you thought that Adam couldn't get any colder, he'd wind up doing the right thing, like when he reunited Tad and Kate.

5. Accidentally killing Stuart.
The only thing worse than killing your own twin is remembering that you did it. With the help of some "friends," Adam recalled the horrifying events that led to the unintentional murder of his beloved sibling.
