This is the Weirdest Mary Tyler Moore Thing You'll Ever See

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 17th 2010 12:33PM
Even people who have a great memory for TV won't remember this. It's a special from 1976 called 'Mary's Incredible Dream.' It was a...well, bizarre experimental variety show starring Mary Tyler Moore where she dreams and...well, you just have to watch it, and thanks to the web you can! Here's the first part, and Jamie Weinman has the rest at his great blog.

This was only a one-time special (thankfully). Moore went on to do another variety show, 'Mary,' which had people like David Letterman and Michael Keaton in the cast but it only lasted a season.

There were actually two, not one, MTM variety series during 1978-79: "Mary" (which lasted only a handful of episodes in the fall) and "The Mary Tyler Moore Hour" (which was in part a scripted show ABOUT putting on a variety show). They were both terrible but in different ways. Their failure did, however, have the effect of making MTM available for the movie Ordinary People, and she did surprisingly well there.

Don't speak for everyone, Bob. I remember seeing this when I was in college. Back then I was on a MTM high, and she could do no wrong. Back then. Looking at it again now... hoo boy.

another example of a self indulgent "star" who think people would be in awe of them burping. and shame on cbs for giving in to it...

Mary's incredible dream was the most dull, boring, non-entertaining mess I've ever seen, and I'm almost 60 years old!

Does anyone else find this completely offensive? Everyone's white but SATAN! I'm thankful television is no longer this racist.
