'Human Target' - 'Lockdown' Recap

(S01E06) It's always a pleasure to watch nerd for hire Kevin Weisman stammer his way through a guest spot on a great show. I loved him as Marshall on 'Alias', enjoyed his stints on 'Moonlight' and 'Roswell', and who could forget his brief appearance as 'Hobbit Lover' in Kevin Smith's 'Clerks II'?

Weisman literally played a nerd for hire in this episode. His character, Martin Gleason, was a brilliant weapons engineer in need of a little rescuing. The twist, of course, was that his own company was holding him prisoner. I guess that's what happens when you're in possession of damning intel that can bring a powerful weapons developer down for good.

'Lockdown' was another fast and fun hour of 'Human Target', a show that literally orders viewers to turn off their brain, sit back and enjoy the implausible ride.

This week's mission had a great 'Leverage'/'Burn Notice' vibe to it, with Chance and crew undermining a corrupt corporation to help out the "little guy." Chance didn't have to "root out" the assassin this week, like he does on most jobs. Instead, he skydived onto the roof of a maximum security building and worked his way through its various high-tech traps and obstacles.

One of those obstacles came in the form of Mitch Pileggi, the second 'X-Files' vet to guest star on the show (the first was "Smoking" Man William B. Davis). Sadly, Pileggi was given little to do but scowl, bark orders and stand in front of a hail of bullets. And speaking of guest stars, it was nice to see Autumn Reeser as Layla, the impossibly cute security tech who fell for Martin.

Winston and Guerrero made a pretty good comic team. The best part of the show's Aunt Linda/Uncle Dan B plot? Watching Guerrero turn into a very scary guy when faced with the thought of going back to prison. Seriously, Jackie Earl Haley looked terrifying in this episode. For their sakes, I hope Chance and Winston never get on his bad side.

We got a few more hints about Chance's backstory. We already knew he used to be a bad guy, and now his former boss is out to get him.

This boss character better be one smart and scary guy once he shows up (I'm guessing he'll appear at the end of the season). The character has to be something special, and very dangerous, to make Chance sweat. The boss seemingly taught Chance everything he knows, which is a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing this potential big bad make his way to San Francisco to give Chance a real challenge.

I couldn't help but indulge in a little fantasy casting after Chance mentioned his old boss. So who should play him on the show? It's likely that the producers are gonna go for a name here, but it's also likely that they won't be able to get a big name. Still, it's fun to speculate. Wouldn't it be cool to see an old '80s action TV star take on the role? I'm thinking Jan-Michael Vincent ('Airwolf') or maybe Fred Dryer ('Hunter'). Are those choices too obvious? Who do you think should play Chance's ex-boss?

See ya in three weeks, folks, when Chance returns for an "international adventure."

How about Samual L. Jackson for Chance's boss.

Keeping with the shows tongue-in-cheek approach, Rick Springfield would be a great choice for the boss.

I actually think his ex-boss is going to be female and that he was involved with her - bitter breakup maybe? I'm sure it's already been cast, but I'd have to vote for Rhona Mitra from The Practice. She was a former Lara Croft model, and can pull off all the characteristics that Chance has and has the right combo of toughness and "hotness" - probably just wishful thinking...

Hmmm. I dunno. Guerrero called the ex-boss a "guy" in the last scene. We'll see.

Oh, and based on some chat-chat in the pilot, I'm pretty sure that Guerrero is Chance's brother. Surely his brother would know his real name.

Ok, I can buy that they only go through Winston and he acts as a gatekeeper between the clients and Chance... but it seems Chance always walks in on their initial meetings.

I have not read any of the comic books so I don't know squat about the character beyond the 6 episodes of this show I've seen, but I thought Christopher Chance actually was his real name, though he has hundreds of aliases which he's used in the past. Is there any evidence thus far that Chance is not his real name, or is that just a presumption?

I'm under the impression that he used to be some sort of bad guy of sorts, or at least was mixed up with the wrong people, and Winston - while working as a law enforcement officer (unclear if cop or FBI or whatever) saved him and got him out of the trouble. I'm sure we'll learn more about this. But that being the case, surely Winston would know who he really is. And he always calls him Christopher Chance. If he was really hiding his identity, he'd give each client a new fake name when they ask, with big, sobby eyes flushed with amazement and grattitude, "can you please tell me your real name?" But he always tells them his name is Christopher Chance. This ties his identity to one consistent alias. If we know nothing else, we know he's too smart for that.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd be surprised if Christopher Chance were not his real name.

I really liked "Hunter" it always reminded me of Dirty Harry a little. Fred Dryer would be perfect.

Perhaps the episode deviated a little from the past few, but it's better to change it up than get stale and boring. Besides the other scientist had been killed and in trying to rescue this scientist from being killed, Chance made himself a pretty big target.
Second these clients are hiring Winston to do the job.
They don't know or aren't aware of Chance.
Also his name is just another alias. Like the time that woman tried to i.d. him and it came up with a list of multiple aliases. He hasn't given out his real name.
Fourth it's not reality. In a show like this you've really got to just let go and not nitpick the details and suspend the disbelief.

If they could get Bruce Willis to do it, or even Richard Dean Anderson, that would be pretty good.

It could happen. They had Danny Glover in the pilot!

"Impossibly cute" describes Autumn Reeser perfectly!

I really enjoyed the episode, but I have liked all of them.
I don't know who should be the big-bad, but I think I read that Jan-Michael Vincent is too ill to work.
Wings Hauser would be good as the former boss. I never cared for "Hunter," so I wouldn't want the star from that show.
