Bill Pullman Joins Jay Harrington in 'Nathan vs. Nurture'

bill_pullman_headshot_2008NBC seems anxious to bounce back in a significant way. The network has a long way to go, but casting Bill Pullman in the sitcom pilot 'Nathan vs. Nurture' was a good step. It's not just that Pullman, who's a terrific actor and extremely funny, will be on the show. It's that he's going to play opposite Jay Harrington, who was announced as the star a few days ago. Those two guys together equals potential hysteria... in a good way.

The premise of 'Nathan vs. Nurture' is promising. Jay's character is a successful heart surgeon who discovers that he was adopted and meets his biological family. And Bill Pullman is his real dad, Arthur. There are also siblings that Nathan's never met before, and between Arthur and the sibs, there's nothing that matches his level of accomplishment. How is it possible if they have the same genes? Well, that's where the comedy kicks in.

Here's more from the Hollywood Reporter story about the NBC pilot: Arthur is a very hands-on father, very involved in the lives of his children and a big-time cheerleader. He overdoes everything positive, love, praise, etc. The kids, unfortunately, haven't turned out nearly as up to snuff as Nathan. What happened?

There are no sure things when it comes to pilots, but this one does sound promising. Of course, the downside of 'Nathan vs. Nurture' taking off is that 'Better off Ted' is probably deader than a doornail. (Isn't that a strange expression...) ABC has treated 'Ted' like a step-child and rolled off the remaining episodes like discounted cans of soup.

It's a shame, too, because 'Ted' was a funny show and will be remembered as one that might have been huge. Don't know why it never took off, but, alas, it didn't. It'll become a cult classic; just wait and see.

'Ted' did elevate Jay Harrington, though. And now with Bill Pullman and 'Nathan,' that big success that he missed out on on ABC could be on NBC next fall. We shall see.

I don't know what variables need to be in play for a sitcom pilot to be successful, but there is one thing I do know; Bill Pullman is far beyond a terrific actor and is extraordinarily funny. He also happens to be the salt of the earth as is his lovely wife!!

There are some pretty great sounds comedy pilots coming up this year and this one sounds potentially funny and now I'll watch at least the first couple of eps simply because of 'Jay Harrington'
I also really hope Portia takes another Hard Lined Character in the future, maybe retain a little Veronica as a nod to BOT. It's such a shame that show didn't catch on. It was witty and fresh.
