ABC Family Heading Back to College for a Fourth Season of 'Greek'

Greek castIt looks like ABC Family is heading for that awkward phase of high school and college-based dramas with 'Greek,' according to The Hollywood Reporter: the fourth year. This is when your freshmen are seniors and you have to figure out what to do with them, and your show, if you make it to five. Of course, you have a little bit of flexibility with college, as many students take longer than four years to graduate, and there's always post-graduate work.

But all of that's a problem for 2011. Right now, the cast and crew of 'Greek' can celebrate that with this fourth season pick-up, they will become the longest running original series currently on the air at ABC Family.

The other side of the coin is that it was only a 10-episode pick-up. The first two seasons ran 22 episodes each, while the third hit 20.

Perhaps ABC Family wants to wait and see how the new season fares. After all, season three started off incredibly strong, posting double-digit percentage gains over previous years, before quickly declining back to levels nearly as low as how the second season ended. Regardless, 'Greek' has become one of the signature shows for the slightly more edgy image the network has been building over the past few years, along with 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager' and 'Make It or Break It.'

More importantly, the season ended on a dramatic cliffhanger. Hopefully, ABC Family will alert the showrunners in advance when they do decide to pull the plug, to make sure loyal fans of the show aren't left as in the dark about the future as the residents of the Gamma Psi house are right now.

They don't have to worry as much with keeping the cast. Cappie isn't graduating any time soon as he hasn't even declared a major yet and they opened up the possibility of Casey enrolling in the local law school. Evan might even end up there right along with Casey now that he probably doesn't have the money to afford those prestigious law schools he wanted to go. Plus Rebecca, Rusty, Dale, and Calvin are all sophomores. So the only character they have to figure out what to do is Ashleigh and a simple "incomplete" or random fail in one class can keep her around longer.
