Are Chuck and Blair Over? And Lily and Rufus, Too? Matthew Settle Reveals 'Gossip Girl' Secrets

When we last saw 'Gossip Girl,' the ghost of Bart Bass was threatening to tear apart Chuck and Blair. But it's his is-she-or-isn't-she dead mother who may finally turn Chuck back into that emotionless deviant we've grown to love. When we caught up with Matthew Settle, who plays dad-without-a-clue Rufus Humphrey (in where else, but New York City's Upper East Side), we desperately needed to learn what's in the romantic cards for our favorite bitchy power couple when the show returns on March 8. Fans of Blair and Chuck, prepare to dab your eyes.

What does the future hold for Blair and Chuck?
Blair and Chuck, as part of their creative lives, need to play games. And so, that means they will always be on-again, off-again.
You're breaking my heart. What about Lily and Rufus?
Rufus doesn't have as much money as everyone else, so he's more idealistic. He has less to lose. Billy Baldwin comes into the picture as Serena's father and he's definitely going to shake things up. We'll have to actually wait until the [fourth] season to see where it all winds up.
Congrats on getting picked up for another season. Where do you see the show going?
Hopefully in seven years we'll be in syndication, and we'll be doing the 'Gossip Girl'/'Sex and the City' movie together.
Just seven years?
I love the idea of working in New York, having a great family of actors to work with and a really amazing crew. If the kids can hang on that long -- I know the kids have so many other talents. You know, like Taylor [Momsen]'s a great singer, and so is Leighton [Meester]. Blake [Lively]'s doing a movie with Ben Affleck.
What's your goal for this year?
To have Ed Westwick do Shakespeare. I really think he has special qualities. He's like a new Richard Burton. Leighton's like a new Elizabeth Taylor. Blake is the next Julia Roberts. Connor Paolo ... he's the hardest worker on the show. He knows everyone's lines; he's so prepared. He's my new movie buddy now.
You hang out?
We just went to see 'The Wolfman.'
