Looks Like Betty White Might Host 'Saturday Night Live' After All

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 22nd 2010 10:30AM
Betty WhiteWho says that internet campaigns don't work? Remember that Facebook campaign to get Betty White to host 'Saturday Night Live?' You thought it was just one of those goofy things that wouldn't lead anywhere, but it looks like it might happen after all (though there's a twist...).

White has said she wants to do the show, and now Michael Ausliello over at Entertainment Weekly is reporting that negotiations are underway for White to host the show later this season. But she wouldn't host it alone. The episode would be a "Women of Comedy" episode, with people like Molly Shannon on board and possibly Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Seems like they might not want White - who is 88 years old - to have to host the entire live show herself.

This could still be a great show anyway. But if they're getting White, why not get some other classic female TV personalities? Wouldn't it be great to have, say, Mary Tyler Moore, Rue McClanahan, and Cloris Leachman join White on the show? I'm sure we could think of other women from TV history that could co-host with White.

She should host it alone. She has plenty of talent and has proven she's got a sharp mind. And Brad, as far as range, if the writers can't write several skits to accomodate her "range" then they are the ones who shouldn't be working on SNL. Come to think if it, some of the skits written for those who you probably think have "range" are pretty poor.

Yeah, Carol Burnett would be great on there, too. And SNL should let the women write some of their own material.

I really doubt they could get Rue, seeing as she had a stroke not too long ago. I couldn't imagine anything better if they did.

Here's how I think they should open the show. They should have one of the cast members talking with Loren Michaels, who is concerned about Betty's age and ability to hos the show. As they are walking along, they see Betty, who's a little nervous, and wish her well. As they are walking along, Loren and whoever come across Alec Baldwin, who is dressed in the same outfit as Betty. he tells Michael that he is ready to go on if Betty has any kind of problem. They say sure sure and continue their walk. They then come across Steve martin, dressed the same, saying he could go on if Betty can't. Loren tells him the same thing he tells Baldwin. Then we come across Chevy Chase, who is also dressed like Betty, and pleads with Loren to let him do the show if Betty can't. His reasoning is he recently did a fall on Community, proving he still has what it takes. Loren says no, you're too old for that, whereby Chevy does a fall and says "Live From New York, It's Saturday Night". But I'm sure they have their own ideas.

I just may have to watch SNL if they get her to hose. The only downside would if these completely waste this talented woman with their usual childish, unfunny skits.

If Drew Barrymore can host it alone at age 7, and Macaulay Culkin at age 11, Betty White can host it at age 88. I think its a little dumb to think she can't do it alone.

You know, that idea of yours in the last paragraph sounds awesome, but will never happen. One, it's likely cost-prohibitive; two, who in SNL's target audience will know who these women are?

I LOVE Betty White, but they probably don't want her to host the show by herself because of a lack of range; I don't mean she's not talented, but at 88 years old, she can't really play the hot mom on the block or the college cheerleader or any role like that (unless it's one time for shock value, and that works for one sketch). It IS a little ageist, but hey, if she's 88 and they want her on the show at all, I'd say that's a win for Betty White

Yeah, women of comedy...there should be a few middle-aged women in there, to get the different "generations" or groups of funny women
