So How Did They Film That New Old Spice Commercial Anyway?

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 22nd 2010 3:02PM
It seems like TV Squad is ruining the illusion of television lately. Last week we showed you how often ChromaKey/green screen is used on TV, and now here's a behind the scenes look at how that new Old Spice commercial was filmed (the one with the guy on the boat, then on the horse). Leo Laporte had two of the guys behind the ad on his TWIT web show recently. Surprisingly, it wasn't all done with special effects.

I laugh out loud every time I hear the guy say "I'm on a horse." So quick and deadpan and funny.

I loved that commercial when I first saw it, and knowing how it was done makes me love it more. It's just too funny!
Really is too bad they couldn't figure out how to make him run while on the horse that would have truly been icing on the cake!!
Even if I didn't have someone to buy the product for, I'd buy it just to encourage more quality commercials from this company!!
Too few really creative , non offensive commercials out there anymore.

I'm not too surprised to find all the recent Old Spice spots have been done by Wieden & Kennedy. Their stuff is almost always brilliantly innovative.

Thanks for the TWiT footage - I hardly ever remember to watch it, but it's always good to be reminded that Leo landed on his feet after leaving TechTV.

This is my new favorite commercial of all time. I've been driving my GF crazy: I'm on a horse!

Saw this for the first time last night. Why can't all commercials be this clever and hilarious?
