Network execs said that they are struggling to cast the police drama's lead character, an uncompromising female detective. In the original series -- which ran for seven seasons on BBC -- Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison was played by none other than Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren.

Mirren earned six Emmy nominations and two wins for her work on on the show. (No wonder the network announced yesterday it would shelve the pilot production until June.)

The show's focus is Tennison. As she investigates crimes, she's forced to navigate through issues of racism, sexual harassment, alcoholism and big-city politics.
