Wha? Oscar Broadcast to Feature a DJ?

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 26th 2010 8:02PM
The Oscar shows have long had a problem attracting the younger crowd, or at least the part that doesn't spend every waking moment organizing the AV club's equipment cabinet. So this year they have tried to "hip it up."

The Academy has hired DJ Joel Madden to serve as the ceremony's "house DJ" for the broadcast.

Producer Adam Shankman said he wanted the show to have more of a party atmosphere. Does that mean there will be a birthday clown and a "Pin the Tail on the Fellini" game too?

The MTV awards did it a few years back with DJ AM as intro and outro beds for the commercials - so you only would hear about 30 seconds of it on each side. I believe that artists sang along to it as well.

I think it's lame that Madden, who is more a celebrity guest DJ that does it as a hobby, is doing this, rather than someone that actually a full-time, working DJ. I don't think many people knew about DJ AM (outside of his dating Nicole Richie) until the MTV gig. I would think it would have been nice to have an *actual* DJ doing the DJ thing - even if it were someone like Samantha Ronson (who I despise). Believe it or not, Tommy Lee (yes, THAT Tommy Lee), is probably more qualified....

And not even a good DJ at that - huge mistake. The only good thing about seeing Madden DJ would be throwing empty bottles at his head.

I would assume it's for the commercial breaks?
