'Desperate Housewives' - 'The Chase' Recap

Desperate Housewives
(S06E16) "You may envy our lives, Gaby, but it's nothing compared to how we envy yours." - Bob to Gaby

After last week's episode centered around Robin, I expected this week's installment to put the main ladies back front and center. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the 'Desperate Housewives'' writers hadn't forgotten about some of the background characters and decided to give them center stage this week.

'The Chase' offered us tidbits about Penny, Karen McCluskey, Andrew, Celia and, two of my favorite recurring characters, Bob and Lee. While introducing a new cryptic character named Sam ... For sure, he has a secret agenda that will rock Wisteria Lane.

Bob, Lee and Celia

Celia didn't get much screen time this week, but the fact that she had chicken pox set the stage for some very interesting scenes with Bob, Lee and Gaby. I'm ecstatic that Gaby ended up at Bob and Lee's, as it gave them much-needed screen time. However, why did Gaby end up at Bob and Lee's instead of at one of her female friends like Susan, who does have a spare room?

Gaby thought the grass was greener on her neighbors' lawn until she discovered that Bob and Lee had been envying her life. The couple is trying to adopt and were almost successful but, sadly for them, the mother changed her mind and decided to keep her baby girl. Awww ... I hope the guys get to adopt in the near future. They seem to be truly ready for it and I'm sure they would be good parents, don't you agree? It would also give them opportunities to interact with the housewives in order to get parenting tips.

Penny

However, Bob and Lee may want to wait until Tom and Lynette get things back in order before asking the Scavos for parenting tips, eh? The Scavos forgot about Penny's eleventh birthday!!! I'm surprised that none of the other Wisteria Lane residents / parents asked the Scavos if they planned a party or something, as some of them would surely attend, such as Celia and Juanita. In any case, this mishap allowed us to see more of Penny, who's been a forgotten character this season.

What first name would you prefer for the unborn baby? Patricia or Polly? Or maybe you have another "P" suggestion? Share your thoughts in comments below.

Karen

Mrs. McCluskey has gotten more screen time this season, mostly thanks to the introduction of Roy. You have to admit that the addition of Roy has brought good laughs and chuckles. Just this week, he compared women to salt and kissed Susan! But Roy is not only a bitter old man, he is also very kind.

How sad is it that Karen may have cancer? Roy is right. Cancer picked the wrong woman to have a fight with. McCluskey is strong and doesn't let anything stand in her way. Let's hope she either doesn't have cancer or, if she does, wins her battle against it, because we need her on Wisteria Lane to snoop around and call it as she sees it.

Andrew

I'm not happy with where the writers took Andrew's storyline. It was refreshing to see how Andrew was able to get his life back on track these past two seasons, and now they have him cheat on Alex! Things may even take a turn for the worse because it looks like Andrew may lose his job. Sadly, I believe Andrew will take it really hard if he gets fired and may go back to some of his old habits until he finds the strength to get back on his feet.

Sam Allen seems to be quite the cryptic character. He sure has studied Bree a lot, and he seems to be driven by some mysterious mission. The fact that he took the "World's Greatest Son" mug to drink seems to hint that he may be related to Bree. Could she have been pregnant when she was really young and ended up giving the baby -- aka Sam -- up for adoption? Or maybe he is a wacko who has "studied" Bree so much that he now believes he is her son? Who do you think Sam really is?

Other tidbits

- Katherine and Robin's relationship has evolved too fast for my taste. It now feels as awkward as Katherine's look in the last scene when she woke up next to Robin. They should have taken things a bit slower, given Katherine time to really see if she was ready for such a relationship, and given Katherine time to know Robin. I do still believe this pairing could end up in an interesting storyline, but the writers need to take a step back and not rush things and wreck the character of Katherine even more. You must admit that Katherine is not the same evil yet lovable character she was when introduced to the show.

- What was it with those soap opera scenes that everyone watched?!? It seems that their only purpose was to set up the stage for a Sprint advertisement!

- Angie and Nick discovered that Danny lied and that he went to NYC to find Ana. Angie is afraid that Danny will venture into their old neighborhood and that Patrick will find him. She also mentions that Patrick found them the last time. I sense that Patrick will stop by Wisteria Lane in time for May Sweeps, you?

To Anna Lytical: Yes, Cherry is gay, but he's also a conservative. If he were trying to force something on people, he wouldn't have such a wide range of characters (Bree to Gabrielle is a pretty big divide). I think he just felt bad that he'd only ever had gay men on the show, and never really anything more than a cameo lesbian.

I did kind of worry that the lesbian thing would be too much (it doesn't bother me, but I know the mostly conservative audience would be: "how much gayer is this show going to get?!!!!"). Still, I think they're playing it as a mistake on Katharine's part because she's so lonely (was she "seduced"?! was a big part of the ending narration), and not because she's really in love/lust with Robin. So the storyline should be over soon. Besides, I don't like Julie Benz's acting--the character's beyond annoying.

Anyway, I was also depressed with the way they treated Andrew. I thought they would allow Andrew to be mature now. I'm surprised that they didn't have Bree reflect on herself because of the storyline though: "Look at the example I've set," and "I've lost my credibility," etc. But I like the new guy in her storyline.

As for the cancer thing, I wonder if they're thinking of a way to get rid of the character so she can get with the show they have in mind for her and Lily Tomlin. I really hope not, because DH can't do without McCluskey (not like Edie or Karl; people bemoan Edie's loss, but she didn't do anything interesting between season 2 and season 5).

I agree with all the folks who complain that "Housewives" is going overboard on same-sex relationships. But to me, the reason seems clear: Mark Cherry, the show's gay creator, is going all out to promote the homosexual lifestyle, making it seem common, positive, and hence acceptable.

It would be kind of cool to find out he was the first son of Bree and Rex before they got married or something. She had to give him up cuz it would have tarnished both their images. I always missed Rex and wished they didn't kill him off so soon. I wished they would have had him come back maybe as a twin brother after she married Orson and have her torn between the two of them since she still loved Rex.

AGREED, Enough is enough. Gay guys can be funny on TV ... except Brothers and Gays with all the incescent whining ... but a lesbian romance isnt as much fun as a homewrecker and ... yuk, all I think of is Rosie O'Pigsty and TomBoy Degeneress (that they want to make us think is a glamorous Cover Girl ... Im not an Olympic Gold Medalist, Shes not pretty ... truth is truth reality is reality) I really like sexy Eva Longoria but this was the first and last time to watch this show this season ... cancel it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that katherine should have had more time to know Robin but then I think that robin should be cut out of the show. She was a stripper in the bar, she decided to quit she's had a few weeks to get on her feet its time for her to go. I cannot stand the name polly, i agree that they would have to get a peg leg and carry her on thir shoulder lol. Of course I dont really like the name penny either. How about Pamela or Piper or Pheobe??
