EXCLUSIVE: What Could Have Been -- Johnny Weir on 'Dancing With the Stars'

Sure, this season's 'Dancing With the Stars' cast is one of the most interesting in the show's history -- Brenda Walsh! Pam Anderson! The Bachelor! Kate Minus 8! -- but after talking to Olympic figure skater and reality star Johnny Weir yesterday, we're left wistfully thinking about what might have been.Because, while it's swell that producers signed up newly crowned Olympic champion Evan Lysacek (aka Weir's rival) to toe tap his way across the 'DWTS' stage, Weir told us that he had also been among the contenders to compete on the show's latest season.
"We definitely had a discussion with 'Dancing With the Stars,' [but] honestly, what they wanted was the Olympic champion," he said. "I absolutely would have done it."
Now, we're left to only imagine what spectacular costumes Weir might have worn had he been cast, though it's a safe bet that they all would have been even more outrageous and memorable than Marie Osmond's infamous 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?'-ish doll costume from season 5.
Weir, who many skating fans felt was robbed of a medal after his spectacular performance in Vancouver last month, will next compete at the World Figure Skating Championships in Italy at the end of March, while his Sundance series, 'Be Good Johnny Weir,' wraps its first season on March 22 (10:30PM ET) with an episode that follows his sixth-place finish at the 2010 Olympics.
Meanwhile, write letters, send e-mails, get a fan campaign going -- bombard 'DWTS' producers with feathers and orange gloves (in homage to Johnny's most famous frock, the swan costume), perhaps? -- because Weir says he would happily join 'Dancing With the Stars' if he's invited for future seasons.
"I think, if not this year, then next year," says the three-time U.S. National Champion skater. "I think I have the personality that I could be a figure skater on 'Dancing With the Stars,' even for next year. So, I would love to do it. And I wish Evan luck this year."
'Dancing With the Stars' season 10 (without, sigh, Johnny Weir) premieres Mon., Mar. 22 on ABC.
Check back Monday for our full Q&A with Johnny Weir, in which he talks about his BFF Paris (and how they're not in a bromance), how he wants to be a 'Real Housewife of Atlanta' and the fur controversy from the Olympics.
