Michael Imperioli Cast as Cop in ABC Drama

michael_imperioli_nbc_headshotOn 'The Sopranos,' actor Michael Imperioli excelled at playing Christopher Moltisanti, a goodfella in every sense of the word. A made man. Definitely on the wrong side of the law. Since the HBO series has ended -- and even before that -- Imperioli has found work on the other side of the badge. He's doing it again. Michael Imperioli will star in '187 Detroit' for ABC, a new cop drama.

The premise of '187 Detroit' is kind of 'The Office' meets 'NYPD Blue' in Michigan. It's a funny take on a Detroit homicide squad if they were to have a documentary crew following them around on cases. Imperioli will be Fitch, the hot-tempered, veteran detective who boasts an impeccable record for closing cases and catching killers.

If you remember how pitcher Randy Johnson once shoved a cameraman out of his way when he first arrived in New York to play for the Yankees, you can imagine Fitch having that same kind of tact and decorum.

Since '187 Detroit' is set in present day, we can count on not seeing the hideous handlebar, Fu-Manchu mustache that Imperioli sported on another ABC cop drama, 'Life on Mars.' No, he should look more like he did on NBC's 'Law & Order,' when he played Detective Nick Falco.

By the way, if you want to see one of Imperioli's best performance of late, find the episode of 'Mercy' he did, playing a guy who cannot live with the fact that he's been the recipient of a transplanted hand which once belonged to a known pedophile. It was an outre situation, but Imperioli's performance was dynamic, possibly Emmy worthy if anyone pays attention to 'Mercy' when it's nomination time.

I too liked him on "Mars" in which he played a detective. He is my favorite working actor. This guy gives back to his craft as much as anyone. This show deserves to be a big breakout for him as the lead. I like the chance they are taking in focusing on Detroit.
