The former host of Sunday mornings' 'State of the Union with John King' is taking over Lou Dobbs' old 7PM spot on the cable news network, after the veteran anchor abruptly stepped down from his post last November.

Boston native King joined CNN in 1997 and served as a senior White House correspondent from 1999 to 2005 before being named chief national correspondent in 2007. Last January, he began anchoring 'State of the Union,' in which he made it a point to visit all 50 states during Obama's first year of presidency. (Senior political correspondent Candy Crowley has since taken over the 'Union' anchor position.)

King promises the same kind of national bent in the preview for his new program, which he says will go beyond the country's capital. "You cannot cover national politics just by being in Washington D.C.," he said.
