'The Young & the Restless' Adds Eden Riegel and Marcy Rylan

The_Young_and_the_Restless_logo_CBSThere's a great history of 'The Young and the Restless' acquiring stars who were once tearing up the screen on 'All My Children.'

Peter Bergman, Elizabeth Hendrickson, Billy J. Miller, are just a few of the 'AMC' alums who have found great characters and thriving story lines among the Genoa City citizenry.

And now you can add another almost iconic Pine Valley actor. Eden Riegel is joining 'The Young and the Restless' taking on the role of Heather Stevens. Currently, Vail Bloom's been playing the assistant district attorney, Paul's daughter, but she's been pink-slipped in favor of Eden.

This is big news, especially when you realize that Riegel turned down the option of reprising her part as Erica's daughter, Bianca Montgomery, on 'All My Children.' That's got to sting ABC because 'AMC' now films in Los Angeles. But from the actress' perspective, Riegel simply didn't want to do what she's already done, even though Bianca's a terrific character with lots of angst and drama and controversy.

Bianca was one half of a high profile lesbian wedding on the show in 2009. That wedding, by the way, was Bianca and Reese. But prior to Bianca's romance with Reese, her first love was Maggie. And Maggie was played by Elizabeth Hendrickson, who is currently on 'Y&R' as Chloe. Oh, don't look any lesbian love story this go-round, but the actresses do have chemistry, so maybe they could become best friends or bitter enemies?

On to the other noteworthy casting news from the show. 'The Young and the Restless' have cast Marcy Rylan as Abby, Ashley and Victor's daughter. She will be going through SORAS -- soap opera rapid aging syndrome -- and become about 25 years old. No more a high school kid; it wouldn't surprise me to see her asking Victor for a job in Newman Enterprises, something like executive vice president in charge of redecorating the corporate suites.

Rylan was wonderful on 'Guiding Light' as Lizzie Spaulding, so you can expect good things from her. Of course, the aging of the character may lead to an epidemic. Recently, Nick and Sharon's son Noah was giving his little cousin Abby advice about the evils of teenage drinking. If Abby is going to suddenly be 25, won't Noah have to return from Paris -- where's he's going to high school to be near Eden (the character, not Riegel) -- with a college degree and the need to shave daily?

Anyway, Eden's first scenes as Heather should be airing in May, as will Marcy's.

Final thought: there are many other examples of big stars moving from one soap to another, but Peter Bergman taking over Jack Abbott after Terry Lester departed is perhaps the greatest one of all. On 'AMC,' Bergman was Dr. Cliff Warner. He was good, kind, a lover ... he personified nice guy. On 'Y&R,' he blossomed as Jack and got to really show his dark side. Best recast ever ... don't you agree?
