'Modern Family' Promos: Best Thing About the Oscars?

Last night's Oscar commercials were "cloudy with a chance of the meatballs."That obscure movie reference and a few others peppered up the 'Modern Family' promos that ran during ABC's Academy Awards broadcast. The promos featured the show's extended family playing charades during an Oscar party. How scene-stealer Gloria (Sofia Vergara) came up with 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' from Jay Pritchett's (Ed O'Neill) raised index finger is part of the wacky charm of the year's breakout comedy hit.

Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) was nimble in his charade interpretations of 'The Music Man' and 'The Shawshank Redemption.' Less so was his 'Brokeback Mountain' when he feigned a pain in the crook of his back. Ouch!
The spot was zippy, smart, edgy and funny -- a nice change of pace from the sometimes dragging Oscars broadcast. And judging from the buzz at our own Oscar parties, it should get some new viewers tuning into 'Modern Family,' which airs 9PM ET Wednesdays on ABC.
