After playing law and order-types on 'NYPD Blue' and 'L.A. Law,' Smits starred on CBS' short-lived 'Cane,' which was canceled during the writer's strike. More recently, he co-starred in Showtime's 'Dexter,' garnering his 12th Emmy nomination to date. (He won in 1990 for 'L.A. Law.')

Smits will be returning to TV after just finishing a Broadway run in 'God of Carnage.' He appears opposite Annette Bening in Rodrigo Garcia's 'Mother and Child,' which hits theaters in May.
