Why is '20/20' Devoting Two Whole Hours to 'The Bachelor?'

The Bachelor
Does 'The Bachelor' season ever really end? It seems that we get another special or two after the season finale. "After The Rose" specials, interviews with the contestants, behind the scenes specials, weddings. And this Monday we have another two-hour special titled 'Inside The Bachelor: The Stories Behind The Rose,' which will be a look at the history of the show and will include interviews with various contestants over the years, audition tapes, never before seen footage, and all of that other "behind the scenes" stuff.

What's most baffling about this is that this isn't just a 'Bachelor' special, it's an episode of '20/20.' Deborah Roberts and Chris Connelly will host the special. If ABC is going to have another special about 'The Bachelor,' why put it under the '20/20' banner? Isn't that going to make viewers not look at '20/20' seriously again? Sure, it has never been '60 Minutes,' but now it's never going to be. I can't imagine CBS having a two-hour '60 Minutes: Return to the Island' special after the season finale of 'Survivor.'

When reality TV starts to merge with news programming, a puppy dies.

I was just reading an article about Disney's annual meeting and apparently there are some stockholders and financial analysts who think Disney should divest or spin off the ABC broadcast network because the news division in particular doesn't offer the possibility of cross promotion and the ever-elusive "synergies" with their entertainment properties. Maybe the network is trying to prove their "critics" wrong.

Sad as it is for me to admit, I am a "Bachelor"/"Bachelorette" watcher (I fully blame my wife for this, btw), so I think I have an idea why we have been inundated with Bachelor stuff in the weeks since the finale.

This season, Jake (aka The Bachelor), eliminated a few people more than he should have at certain times throughout the season -- in once episode, he eliminated 4 people (I think) instead of 2, which was what he was supposed to do at that time. So I think ABC had both initially planned a certain number of weeks in their scheduling calendar to show The Bachelor and set a premiere date for Dancing With the Stars well beforehand. So when the additional cast-offs cut the season down, they had to scramble to fill in the gaps; hence the Jason/Molly Bachelor wedding and this 20/20 "special" next week.

I know this doesn't really answer the initial question -- perhaps they needed to add the "20/20" name to give it some sense of legitimacy? -- but just an FYI.

Going to go hang my head in shame now; thank you :)
