Jason Segel Found A Star For His New Muppet Flick: Himself

Jason SegelWhen we here at TV Squad HQ (an outhouse-sized shack in the suburbs of Paducah, KY) heard that Jason Segel of 'How I Met Your Mother' was co-writing a new theatrical Muppet movie, there was much rejoicing.

Why? Because, while Neil Patrick Harris gets all the attention, Segel has quietly become the comedic glue of the show, able to do subtle humor and physical shtick with the best of them. Also, despite his relative youth, he has expressed his love of the Muppets in the past. So we had a feeling that he was going to produce a script that recalled the best of the Muppet flicks, 'The Muppet Movie' and 'The Great Muppet Caper,' while keeping a modern edge.

Now The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog has the news that Segel will also be starring in the movie, tentatively titled 'The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time,' as the Muppets' live action buddy, who along with Kermit seeks to reunite the gang to save their old theater. Huzzahs all around.

This is shaping up to be a fun movie that might have a fighting chance of having that wink-wink tone that grown-ups have loved about the Muppets for over forty years now. James Bobin of 'Flight of the Conchords' was signed to direct last month, and it seems that the combination of Bobin, Segel and co-writer Nicholas Stoller will help keep things up-to-date, despite what ACIN said when they reviewed the script in 2009. Movies change quite a bit from the supposed "final" script to when it comes time to shoot, so any of the outdated references or flat sections might be tightened by the time it's ready to be filmed.

What I'm really looking forward to, however, is the music in the movie. Segel's done a good job of writing and performing funny songs on both 'Mother' and in movies like 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall.' Heck, in 'Sarah Marshall,' his character not only wrote a funny puppet musical for Dracula, he didn't do a half-bad job being one of the puppeteers, either.
