'Justified' Preview: 'The Shield' Meets 'Deadwood'

by Sharon Knolle, posted Mar 16th 2010 9:00AM
Timothy Olyphant, 'Deadwood's fearless Sheriff Seth Bullock, takes up his badge -- and his gun -- once again to defend a lawless small town tonight on the debut of FX's new series 'Justified.'

Olyphant plays US Marshal Raylan Givens, who is forced to return to the rural Eastern Kentucky county where he was raised. There, he finds a town as corrupt and violent as any the Old West had to offer. He squares off against his former best friend, now a hardened bank robber, played by Walton Goggins from 'The Shield.' It's smart casting: Goggins indelibly played Vic Mackey's closest friend turned deadliest enemy and we're dying to see these two actors face off.Timothy Olyphant, 'Deadwood's fearless Sheriff Seth Bullock, takes up his badge -- and his gun -- once again to defend a lawless small town tonight on the debut of FX's new series 'Justified.'

The names behind the series are just as compelling: Graham Yost ('Boomtown,' 'Speed') developed the show, based on a character created by Elmore Leonard. The novelist, whose work has been adapted into '3:10 to Yuma,' 'Get Shorty' and 'Jackie Brown,' is on board as an executive producer. Exec producer Michael Dinner ('Kidnapped') is clearly a big Leonard fan: He worked on the first series inspired by a Leonard novel, the short-lived 'Karen Sisco,' starring Carla Gugino as the title character.

'Justified' joins FX series like 'Rescue Me', 'Nip/Tuck' and 'Sons of Anarchy,' edgy "for mature audiences only" shows that redefined basic cable. Casting 'Shield' mainstay Goggins is a nice tip of the hat to the ground-breaking, award-winning cop series that put FX on the map as a network to rival HBO and Showtime.

The show's title was changed to 'Justified' from the original 'Lawman' to avoid confusion with the reality show 'Steven Seagal: Lawman,' on A&E.

So far, 'Justified' is earning glowing reviews. EW's Ken Tucker gave the show an "A," and called the actors "superb." Variety raved about Olyphant, saying, "The 'Deadwood' alum enlivens every scene he's in ... Olyphant delivers an unabashed star turn in this one." The Hollywood Reporter praised Goggins' "riveting acting" as villain Boyd Crowder and applauds Yost for not killing off such an intriguing character, as originally planned.
