Paula Abdul in Talks With ABC for 'Star Search'

paula_abdul_cleavage_hairHmm ... this is an interesting development. For weeks, it seemed that Simon Cowell was all set to snag his old 'American Idol' foil, Paula Abdul, for 'The X Factor.' That's the new talent competition show Simon is launching on Fox in 2011. Reportedly, Simon wanted Paula as an 'X Factor' judge.

Simon now has competition for Paula. ABC has offered Paula Abdul a spot on 'Star Search.' According to the Hollywood Reporter, following another report in Entertainment Weekly, the latest incarnation of 'Star Search' will be a singing competition and Paula could be a host and a judge. That's twice as much as she did on 'American Idol.'

More importantly, it's on ABC.

After the way Fox treated Paula on 'Idol,' it might be that Paula is ready, willing and able to go to another network where she might be treated with a little more respect. Think about it, would you go back to the same people that essentially told you that you were worth less than half of the main men on the same show in which you were working?

That was the case on 'Idol.' Ryan Seacrest was held in greater esteem and Paula was given a pat on the head and told to be a good girl and take what they gave her.

Okay, it probably wasn't really like that. Still, if ABC really wants Paula, she's being wooed and that's a very good feeling. Also, 'Star Search' is a known quantity, a familiar name. With Paula attached, it would get an audience at least to start. If the show was actually good, it would run. And Paula could take credit for it -- solo credit.

As for 'The X Factor,' since that's not till 2011, there's still a chance that Paula could do that ... if Paula negotiates to give her an out to do it whether 'Star Search' clicks or not. That would seem to be putting her in the cat bird seat. Should be fun to see how this all plays out.

I thought The X Factor was launching this fall. So this means that there will be a season of American Idol without Simon before he returns to TV?

It actually makes sense so the existing Idol audience will have a chance to sample the new Idol before they see Simon Cowell's new show...
