Rachel Maddow Calls Out Senator Jim Bunning's Stand for Candy Cigarettes (VIDEO)

by PJ Simon, posted Mar 17th 2010 3:13PM
Tuesday's 'Rachel Maddow Show' (weekdays, 9PM ET on MSNBC) turned the spotlight on a strange connection between Kentucky Republican Senator Jim Bunning and candy-flavored cigarettes. Maddow reports on Senator Bunning's outrage that a new law passed by the Canadian Parliament has banned candy-flavored cigarettes in Canada on the grounds that they encourage children to pick up smoking. Yes, you read that correctly -- Bunning, who represents a tobacco-growing state, is actively protesting against another country's efforts to curb smoking among young people.

What's even more bizarre is how Senator Bunning has chosen to voice his displeasure with the Canadian law. Maddow reports that he has placed holds on President Obama's nominations of an Assistant Treasury Secretary, the Chief Agricultural Negotiator, and the Ambassador to the World Trade Organization, while he demands that a formal complaint be filed to force Canada to rescind the ban. After explaining the elaborate web of absurdity, Maddow ends the segment by noting that his issue is now with "the Canadian Parliament, which may or may not be the name of a cigarette."
