by Michael Maloney, posted Mar 18th 2010 5:00PM
Julianne Moore's return to her role as Frannie Hughes on 'As The World Turns' and the upcoming retirement of David Canary from his part as Adam Chandler on 'All My Children' got us thinking: some of the best performances on daytime television have come from actors who've played dual roles!

Here's a look back at ten stars that have done double-duty (and sometimes more) in TV's most demanding genre.

Anne Heche, 'Another World'
Played:
Marley Love. The sheltered sister of Donna and Peter Love, Marley had traditional teen woes before discovering her family tree had a case of root rot -- Marley was, in reality, Donna's daughter.

Here's a look back at 10 stars that have done double-duty (and sometimes more) in TV's most demanding genre.

Anne Heche, 'Another World'
Played:
Marley Love. The sheltered sister of Donna and Peter Love, Marley had traditional teen woes before discovering her family tree had a case of root rot -- Marley was, in reality, Donna's daughter.
Also Played: Victoria Carson. Marley's long-lost twin grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and had the attitude to prove it. Vicky stepped up and gave Marley a bone marrow transplant despite resenting her sister's cushy childhood.
The Twin Hit The Fan: Vicky impersonated Marley when her fragile twin skipped out while on trial for attempted murder. Then, when Vicky was called as a witness, Marley, pretending to be Vicky, made the most dramatic court appearance since Marlene Dietrich starred in 'Witness for the Prosecution.'

Julianne Moore, 'As the World Turns'
Played:
Frannie Hughes. Frannie, the daughter of Dr. Bob and and the late Jennifer, grew to love her aunt Kim (Jen's sister and Bob's wife) like her own mother.
Also Played: Sabrina Hughes. Frannie tracked down Sabrina after seeing her look-alike in Europe not knowing that Sabrina was Bob and Kim's lovechild/Frannie's half-sister/cousin previously believed to have died at birth.
The Twin Hit The Fan: Infidelity turned out to be genetic among the Hughes family. Sabrina allowed Frannie's fiance Seth to make love to her even though she knew that Seth thought she was Frannie. The engagement, understandably, was called off.

Kim Zimmer, 'Guiding Light'
Played:
Reva Shayne Lewis. The daughter of the Lewis' family maid wed true love Joshua for the first time in 1989. Along the way, she survived being hit by a car (twice), a suicide attempt and a coma.
Also Played: Dolly. The writers threw Zimmer a new challenge when they had her play Reva's clone. Despite being taken from the headlines (Dolly was the name of a real cloned sheep) the outlandish plot never caught on with fans.
The Twin Hit The Fan: Dolly didn't want to lose her identity so she pulled an 'Eva Grubb' and kept Reva a prisoner. A case of accelerated aging sent Dolly to that great soap in the sky and put an end to a storyline that proved you can't duplicate an original like Reva.

Larkin Malloy,
'Edge of Night'

Played: Jefferson Brown. Opportunistic Jeff underwent plastic surgery to make himself look like his rich pal Sky after the two men were in a fatal plane crash. Thinking his buddy was dead, Jefferson wed the deliciously self-absorbed Raven and they conspired to live greedily ever after.
Also Played: Sky Whitney. Yep, Jeff's wealthy friend wasn't so dead after all. But he was still rich. After Jeff was killed, Sky returned to Monticello and reclaimed his fortune from Raven, much to the merry widow's dismay.
The Twin Hit The Fan: Mystery enthusiasts soon predicted the twist with Sky, but they weren't counting on Gunther (one of Jeff's victims) also having a twin. The dual twist kept late actor David Froman (Gunther/Bruno) on canvas until the show's finale in 1984.

Erika Slezak, 'One Life to Live'
Played: Viki Lord Banks. Fan favorite and six-time Daytime Emmy winner for 'Outstanding Lead Actress,' Slezak brings class and respectability to the daytime genre as the heroic and flawed matriarch of Llanview.
Also Played: Six of Viki's alternates. Slezak also has brought new meaning to the term 'tour de force' by playing Viki's many alternate personalities: promiscuous Niki, cold and calculating Jean, child-like Princess, rage-filled Tommy, arsonist Tori and abusive Victor Lord, a version of Viki's own tyrannical father.

Eileen Davidson,
'Days of our Lives'
Played:
Kristen Blake. As the adopted daughter of villain Stefano DiMera, Kristen proved that evil is a learned trait.
Also Played: Susan Banks. Sister Mary Moira Banks. Thomas Banks. Penelope Kent. Yep. Davidson was given an actor's dream (or nightmare!) when she played five different roles -- including a man. When Penelope turned up dead, people thought Kristen had been killed.
The Twin Hit The Fan: John realized he was standing at the altar with the wrong woman when Susan's fake teeth flew out of her mouth and into Vivian's drink. Later, Kristen failed to double-talk her way out of her schemes and wound up a prisoner on an island.

Stacy Haiduk, 'The Young and the Restless'
Played: Patty Williams. The emotionally-damaged former child bride of womanizing Jack Abbott returned to Genoa City with a new identity -- public relations executive Mary Jane Benson.
Also Played: Dr. Emily Peterson. Patty was so enamored of her therapist that she had plastic surgery to make herself look like her favorite shrink.
The Twin Hit The Fan: Jealous that Emily became engaged to Jack, Patty drugged the good doctor during a visit to her padded cell, traded clothes and -- in a slight stretch of the imagination -- hair colors (courtesy of a bottle of peroxide.) Patty's still managing to fool everyone even though Emily survived her former patient's attack.

Michelle Forbes,
'Guiding Light'
Played:
Sonni Carrera Lewis. When Josh and Reva were on the outs, he re-married his 'late' wife Sonni, who he thought had fallen to her death from a bridge shortly after they had wed.
Also Played: Solita Carrera. Was Sonni really alive? It looked like her twin Solita was impersonating her. How else could her secret meetings with Will and her cigarette-smoking be explained?
The Twin Hit The Fan: After the writers' strike of 1988 ended, the show's scribes got the story back on track. It finished where it began -- on a bridge in Venezuela. During a face-off with Reva, Sonni (who really was Sonni) recalled that Solita had committed suicide. Forbes' daily powerhouse performances were both compelling and riveting.

Natalia LivingstonNatalia Livingston, 'General Hospital'

Played: Emily Bowen Quartermaine. 'GH' fans everywhere shed tears when heroine Emily was murdered at her engagement party to true love Nikolas Cassadine.
Also Played: Rebecca Shaw. When 'GH' wanted Livingston back, the show's scribes dipped into the ABC vault of soap secrets and gave Emily a twin sister (Rebecca) faster than you could say "Kelly Cole."
The Twin Hit The Fan: Rebecca turned out to be conning everyone, which torpedoed her romance with Nikolas. She hopped a plane for Paris. Before takeoff, she met Aaron -- a doppelganger for Emily's late beau Zander -- proving that even evil twins deserve happy endings.

David Canary, 'All My Children'
Played:
Adam Chandler. The powerful mogul started out as the latest love-interest of Erica Kane.
Also Played: Stuart Chandler. Adam's twin may have been simple-minded, but Stuart was pure of heart and did his best to show Adam what was really important in life.
The Twin Hit The Fan: Adam accidentally killed Stuart last year. He ended up not having to serve time, but when it comes to guilt and regret, Adam knows he's been handed a life sentence. It took Stuart's death to make Adam realize which one of them had been the true caretaker in the family.
