'Archer' - 'Dial M for Mother' Recap (Season Finale)

(S01E10) Whoa, whoa, whoa. Did 'Archer' just get sentimental on us for a split second? It was an almost stealthy move. Sure, the season finale wrapped up with Mallory calling her son an ass but it was... sweet. Considering the whole super-spy nature of the show, the rest of the finale wasn't very action-packed. Instead, the focus remained on Archer and Mallory's relationship and the sick, twisted world of ISIS office romances. I think the picture accompanying this post pretty much sums that part up.

Overall, though, this was one of my favorite episodes from the series so far, with a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. And I'm sure you didn't realize we needed a new "Schwing!" but let's pretend that's what "Sploosh" (with the little hand motion) is going to be.

Picking up where we left off last time, it seems like Lana and Cyril are pretty much over. After all, Lana went through the trouble of having every man in the office (gay and otherwise) make up obscene tales of what went on beyond the door. It's going to be tough to get a relationship past that. Oh. And, presumably, she ended up having sex with Pam. That too. Pam's meltdown was actually pretty great, if only to demonstrate a brief glimpse at her non-snarky and full-on sad side.

I guess we're going to have to wait until season two before we can see if Cheryl (ah, back to just correcting people) had her throat crushed by a robot arm. Surely it wasn't just me that thought that scene was a wee bit ominous.

There was also a sneaky appearance by a heavily disguised Trinette, who gave away her identity with the classic cry of "shit-ass!" So... she has a baby now? And the daddy knows krav maga? It was mentioned in one of the earlier episodes that ISIS agents use krav maga... and Trinette and Archer aren't strangers... Is this sowing the seeds for next season?

Speaking of missing daddy stuff, there wasn't any closure to Archer's situation. The KGB fellow said that he would run a paternity test before inserting the chip, but it sounded like he went ahead with the surgery immediately after the kidnapping. season two is just going to be a whole mess of daddy problems.

One of my favorite scenes was the ending with Mallory and Archer ("What do you want!? Because all you're gonna get is holes!... I mean, holes in you. Not mine"). I'll admit I gasped out loud when Mallory thought she had pumped Archer full of lead. The motherly scolding, Archer's grilled cheese tears, and the childish back-and-forth at the table were all fantastic. Beautiful timing, great dialogue.

Other notable moments included Cyril's 'The Graduate' moment, Archer's fake voicemail messages ("HA! Alternate voicemaaail"), and every time Archer started screaming over the ringtone, I lost my mind. There was not a dull moment in this episode, actually.

In just ten short episodes, 'Archer' has reached a level of confidence in delivery and material that a lot of shows take seasons to reach. Someone wake me when season two starts up.

I loathed the "sploosh" but loved the rest of this episode and season.

It's been airing 16:9 on FXHD since it premiered. Maybe this episode was just too action packed that it had to spread it all out.

Who did Lana say she was going to picture Pam as when they slept together? Was it Webster's dad?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Karras

When Mannfred and the loopy chick kidnap Archer in the van, she's wearing an "Excelsior" t-shirt from 'Skytanic'.

Jon Benjamin is such a great actor. Did you heart just break at his whimpers in Mallory's office?

They ripped off the title from an old episode of The Critic.
