'Glee'-Inspired Musical Week on Fox Includes a Singing, Dancing 'Fringe'

Geeks, meet Gleeks.

To kick of the May sweeps, Fox is planning a week of 'Glee'-inspired musical programming, including a musical episode of sci-fi fan fave 'Fringe.' In the April 29 episode, entitled 'Overture,' the show's paranormal investigators will find themselves suddenly breaking out into song and dance numbers.

Turns out a lot of the 'Fringe' cast have music backgrounds, so they were psyched to show off their crooning and hoofing skills as part of the typical weirdness of the show. How do these musical interludes come about? Read on for spoilers.

According to recent cast interviews at TV Guide and SciFiWire, the episode takes place largely in eccentric scientist Walter's (John Noble) head, as he's telling a bedtime story to Olivia's (Anna Torv) niece. The way he envisions the characters, said Jasika Nicole (who plays Agent Astrid Farnsworth), they're in period costumes from the 1940s, "but they still have cell phones and stuff." Think Dennis Potter's 'Pennies From Heaven' or 'The Singing Detective.'

Among the numbers: Torv vamps it up as a film noir detective; Nicole sings a tune from 'A Chorus Line,' Blair Brown (scary tech mogul Nina Sharp) serenades Torv, and hard-boiled Broyles (Lance Reddick) plays piano and croons a verse from a Traffic song. "Oh, it's gonna be a blast," said Reddick, who has a side career as a jazz crooner.

Comparisons will inevitably be made to the classic 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' musical episode 'Once More With Feeling.' Of course, 'Buffy' mastermind Joss Whedon is directing an upcoming episode of 'Glee,' and his sci-fi supervillain Dr. Horrible, a.k.a. Neil Patrick Harris, is an upcoming 'Glee' guest star. See, just like always on 'Fringe,' it's all about alternate universes overlapping.

Now, how is Fox going to work a musical plot line into '24'? Is Jack going to torture someone by making them listen to Heidi Montag's album?
