Huge Opening for 'Dancing With the Stars'
They were probably dancing in the halls at ABC on Tuesday after getting a look at the Nielsens from Monday night. 'Dancing With the Stars' return was a ratings boon, lifting the entire Monday schedule to a big-time win in the ratings. Typically, CBS challenges ABC for Monday night supremacy with Fox in the mix thanks to the strength of 'House.' However, this past Monday found the new installment of 'Dancing With the Stars' -- the tenth -- winning in the key 18-49 demographic and drawing nearly 24 million total viewers.
More significantly, the strong lead in boosted 'Castle' to a series high -- nearly 13 million total viewers -- and besting CBS's 'CSI: Miami' for the first time ever. In fact, it was an all-time low for 'Miami,' despite a Horatio and son episode. Hmm ... could that be the sign of some erosion from the venerable CBS procedural or was it the Dana Delany guest spot on a two-part 'Castle'?
The Hollywood Reporter suggested that the big opening for 'DWTS' was due to a strong cast. Really? Chad Ochocinco, Pam Anderson, Buzz Aldrin, Kate Gosselin, Erin Andrews ... I wouldn't exactly call that a stellar line up. It may be more that the show itself has a loyal following and the fans were ready for a new edition.
What's more interesting, though, is what happens in the next few weeks. 'House' won't be in reruns, like this past Monday, and the novelty of 'Dancing's' return will wear off.
