'Smallville's' Lex Luthor is 'Saved By Zeroes'

Michael Rosenbaum and Jonathan SilvermanThe actor who formerly played Lex Luthor on television's 'Smallville,' Michael Rosenbaum, is set to star in a half-hour comedy series on Syfy about ... wait for it ... a former science fiction television star from a show with a cult following. It's a case of "art imitates life."

The project is called 'Saved By Zeroes' and also stars Jonathan Silverman, who hasn't been in any science fiction shows that I recall, unless you count 'Weekend at Bernie's II.' The premise is that the two co-stars blew all their money from the sci-fi show that made them famous and have to work conventions to make ends meet.

The premise sounds cute but is definitely an example of "channel drift" since it is only tangentially related to science fiction. Here's to hoping that Rosenbaum's new gig doesn't keep him from making at least one cameo as Lex Luthor during the series finale of 'Smallville' in 2021 (or whenever it ends).

All I can think of are those annoying Toyota "Saved by zero" commercials from fall 2008... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be5Xy66cwD0

I'm in total agreement that SyFy (ick it just pains to even type that and have to look at it) has been lost to channel drift -- hell, I'm not even sure if you can qualify such things anymore when you look at the mess that is TLC (which apparently stands for (Too many Large families with too many Children), A&E, or AMC. Even my beloved History Channel... Axe Men, really?

But at least this sitcom seems like it fits. It's not a sci-fi program but it fits with what the original intent of the channel seemed to be more than wrestling. If it goes for jokes that explores the "fandom" relationship rather than solely mocking it (not that I don't think there's plenty to mock), it could actually be a great show.

"Channel drift" doesn't even come close to explaining the disaster that has become Syfy.

With a headline like, "Syfy Announces Expansive Slate of New Reality Development" you know they are in full-on channel drift mode.

Read through the descriptions and try to pick out what network each show should have been on.
