Kids Choice Awards Red Carpet: Allison Iraheta Talks Top 10, 'Slumdog' Star on His Next Role

by Anna Dimond, posted Mar 28th 2010 9:00AM
After a winter awards frenzy for some of Hollywood's most seasoned stars, it was the kids' turn Saturday to take center stage at Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards, just in time for spring break -- and with temps that felt like summer.

Forget Academy politics and catering to the foreign press. The annual award show allows fans to vote on categories that include include staples like favorite TV actress (Selena Gomez took the orange blimp this year) and demo-specific verticals like cutest couple ('New Moon''s fictional Jacob and Bella [Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart] beat out the Obamas) and favorite voice from an animated movie (Jim Carrey). Comedian Kevin James hosted the event, which featured performances from tween phenom Justin Bieber and Rihanna, plus the requisite celeb-sliming.

Sweltering afternoon heat didn't stop the likes of Rihanna, Will Smith and his family, the Jonas Brothers and more from swarming the orange carpet ahead of the show. While the KCAs is familiar turf for some, others were taking it all in for the first time. After a winter awards frenzy for some of Hollywood's most seasoned stars, it was the kids' turn Saturday to take center stage at Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards, just in time for spring break -- and with temps that felt like summer.

"I chose the right day to wear [leather]," Allison Iraheta joked with AOL TV. "They told me there was going to be cover [over the carpet]." It was the first Kids Choice for the season 8 'American Idol' finalist, who's been busy promoting her first album, 'Just Like You,' which was released in December, 2009.

Still, Iraheta's making time to bond with 'American Idol''s new top 10 finalists -- not to mention offer a little advice, and send a big message. "I was hanging with [the Idols] ... at ... the top 10 party," she said. "I was telling them to be true to themselves, [that's] what's going to help them. ... They're real -- all of them. I really hope the girls take it this year. C'mon girls! Represent."

"Crystal [Bowersox] ... is amazing -- home girl with the dreads," Iraheta gushed. "I love her guitar playing, she's really cool." The 'Idol' alum also cautioned the remaining finalists to up the ante. "All of them can sing," she said. "'Idol''s seen everything now. I think they want something different." Repetition notwithstanding, the juggernaut won a Kids Choice Award for favorite reality show.

Iraheta, meanwhile, wasn't the only one at the KCAs for the first time. "It's crazy! Lots of kids on sugar," said 'Slumdog Millionaire' star Dev Patel. "I love to see the younger generation out here, doing their thing. ... It's ... inspiring."

This summer, Patel will be appearing in M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Last Airbender.' His role as Zuko is his first film since his breakout performance in 2008's Oscar-winning 'Slumdog.' "I wanted to get something totally different than what I did in 'Slumdog,' he told AOL. "This is a fantasy film, [in which I'm going from] a $14 million film to $150 million. Just a whole different ball game altogether. I'm playing a villain ... so it's very different." "['Airbender'] is is a trilogy," he added. "So hopefully there's another two in the pipeline."

For other stars sweating out the arrivals, the KCAs are simply a family outing. "This is my son," Maria Bello said, indicating the small blond boy shyly holding her hand. "He's been wanting to go to the Nickelodeon awards for months. My friend Kevin James, who I did a movie with this summer [Adam Sandler's 'Grown Ups'], is the host, so I'm so excited to be here."

As the actress began to chat about summer travel plans, she stopped abruptly. "Selena Gomez is right there-- excuse us!"
