Lucasfilm Milks the Dead Cow with Star Wars TV Comedy

by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 6th 2010 11:35AM
Robot Chicken Star WarsGeorge Lucas has already created a spin-off cartoon and a computer animated series on Cartoon Network of his famous 'Star Wars' franchise. Now, Lucasfilm Animation will be working with the creators behind 'Robot Chicken,' among others, to create an animated 'Star Wars' comedy series.

'Robot Chicken' along with 'Family Guy' proved that there is comedy potential in the 'Star Wars' franchise, but it sounds like Lucas is further mitigating the cultural impact of the first trilogy (or even the second trilogy, going by order of release) by making light of it.

Lucas has long proven that the fans care more about the franchise than he ever did. It has gotten to the point where pumping out 'Star Wars' dreck is a means to an end. Perhaps he wants the money to build his own Death Star?

Of course, that live action 'Star Wars' series has yet to appear, so this latest item could just be someone's idea of a late April Fool's Day prank. One can have "a new hope."

Hey, I resent that remark. I'm older than 35.

The Star Wars universe is no stranger to *intentional comedy* (I say that with full recognition of the unintentional comedy...or lack thereof...in the holiday special).

A few years ago, Dark Horse comics put out a short series featuring a couple of 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern' -esque characters named Tags and Bink. The duo stumble their way through the background of what fans would recognize as pivotal scenes from the movies, influencing the outcomes of those moments as they go along. The story was actually pretty humorous.

And I agree with Mike -- the Robot Chicken / Star Wars material is great, especially because it often skewers the source material.

I think played off the right way, this series could work.

And besides, Lucas can't really muck things up more than they are already...right? RIGHT?

sigh.

Brad, you're usually pretty on track... Here you sound like a disappointed little fanboy hack. Did Jar Jar ruin your 20 year wait for new wank material, or what? The folks who do Robot Chicken are funny. Their Star Wars spoofs were great, and in many ways biting with regard to the prequel trilogy. They're also clearly not interested in telling overly kiddy stuff. All of which leads me to think this could be a fun little show. If you've read the IGN report, you'll know that this isn't going to be centered within the main saga, but rather as incidental to the SW universe. Of course it all depends on execution... but we haven't seen anything done yet... how could we? And yet, without seeing how it's executed, you dismiss it and bitch.

Given that The Clone Wars has almost uniformly been better than any of the prequels, I'm not really sure where that's coming from... and really, I don't care. I was just hoping for a little more from you than this dismissal, given that you're usually on top of things... here you just come across as a 35 year old fatty living and bitching in his mom's basement about George Lucas not giving you the entertainment you want and demand...
