TLC Orders New Kate Gosselin Series

by Annie Wu, posted Apr 9th 2010 9:45AM
kate gosselinListen, the television industry is tough. There are so many hours of airtime to fill, and not every family with more than six children is guaranteed to be super-cute. So you can imagine TLC's challenge trying to come up with new material. This is probably why they went back to one of their stand-out personalities, Kate Gosselin of 'Jon & Kate Plus 8' fame, to kick off a new series called 'Twist of Kate,' in which Gosselin will interact with a variety of American families and "see what she can do to help."

Well, the concept is surprising but it is probably a smart move for TLC to bring back one of their big ratings heavy hitters. The channel's obviously part of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. Or rather "If it broke, then scrape together the remaining pieces and put a handful of them back on TV with a slightly better haircut."

When the Jon and Kate scandal was in full swing, congealing into the tastiest tabloid fodder, it seemed like there was no end in sight. Kate was still pushing on with the show, alongside her eight kids. Jon was also doing stuff at this time, but most of it involved looking greasy in gossip rags and wearing a lot of Ed Hardy. Truly, it seemed like all Kate had to do was let Jon self-destruct his loving father character (note: If you want to look like the sympathetic dad, do not wear Ed Hardy), and she would easily emerge as the good guy. How, exactly, would this inspire people to seek ordinary, everyday family advice from her?

It's probably the same mentality that was applied to NBC's 'The Marriage Ref,' which makes baffling choices in terms of guest stars, there to provide marriage commentary and advice. Let's just say Madonna doesn't have the sweetest record when it comes to amicable break-ups.

Maybe it has nothing to do with the quality of advice and TLC's only pushing this through because some producer thought of the show's title and built backwards from that, deciding 'Twist of Kate' was way too clever to pass up. That seems to make more sense.

Couldn't we just go back to Trading Spaces with the original cast? I would even settle for Trading Spaces reruns. Didn't watch her the first time around, will not be watching this time.

TLC..... are you nut's? Why would you give this "Diva" any more air time? Can you not tell by all the negative feedback that no one cares to watch? We have seen enough of her! Please re-consider and at least put on something worth watching.

I liked the kids. Too bad they can't do a show about them (& Jon, who was always really good with them) & leave her out entirely.

For people who always complain about Kate being on television, and how they wish she would go away, they sure do know a lot about her life. I don't care for the Jersey kids, so I don't watch them or read about them and they don't bother me a bit. I flip the dail till something I like pops up.

Kate has made plenty of money. The original Kate Plus....the book....DWTS....all the freebies, including the trips, etc. She got a taste of the good life and the only way she can keep it now is to continue using those kids. She has three nannies raising her kids. I guess she has to pay them somehow.

I guess I am going to be the contrarian here and wish Kate the best of Luck in her new show.

Kate has 9 mouths to feed and kids to raise. I never fell into the group of viewers who felt having the Gosselin kids on TV was a horrible thing. The kids got to go on great adventures, and the money their parents made from the show provide the kids a much better life then they would have had otherwise.

Was Kate a shrew towards John and talk down towards him? Was John a douche for not seeing the big picture and cheating on Kate? Is John now being a bigger douche be filling lawsuits which are going to hurt's Kate's ablity to feed the kids? Yes / Yes and Yes.

But it should be about the kids, and if Kate can have an entertaining show on TLC which helps feed and house her family then I say..... Best of Luck....

And meanwhile, her kids' lives will suffer.

Great parenting, dummy.
