'Lost' Flash Sideways Theories: Collision, Convergence & Course Correction

We've seen many paths crossed both in flashbacks and flashes sideways on 'Lost,' but how will Island Jack ultimately collide or converge with the Jack we've come to know in the flash sideways?

At some point in the final seven hours of 'Lost,' the flash sideways world will either be resolved or dissolved. At some point in the final seven hours of 'Lost,' the flash sideways world will either be resolved or dissolved. What follows are a few theories about how the universe will course correct and determine which life people are destined to live out; on the island or in the real world, never having crashed there.

Theory 1: Sliding Doors
Exposure to the electromagnetic energy beneath the Swan station, released when Juliet detonated Jughead, caused Jack and company to flash sideways. As indicated by Juliet's posthumous message to Miles, "it worked." Thus, they are all living concurrently on the island and in the flash sideways world.

Desmond experienced his flash sideways when exposed to the same type of energy in last week's episode. He is and always has been Jacob's loophole, and Desmond will be the one to complete Jacob's prophecy that "it only ends once." He will be the one to somehow merge both worlds, and will sacrifice his life to save all of his friends, much like Charlie did at the end of season 3.

Theory 2: See You in Another Life
In the flash sideways world, the passengers from flight 815 will coincidentally appear at a function or location together. Simultaneously, something will occur on the island that causes a complete memory restoration in the sideways world, and their island lives will cease to exist. Everyone will remember the crash and what happened on the island, and look around at one another in a new and potentially horrifying light.

Theory 3: One Way Out
Everyone on the island will die in order for the flash sideways world to become the only reality.

Man in Black LostTheory 4: War of the Worlds
In the flash sideways world, the island is under water because the Man in Black was able to leave the island. Using Jacob's wine metaphor, the cork fell out and darkness escaped into the real world. In the end, the flash sideways world will only become a reality for those who joined the Man in Black during the pending war with Jacob. Those who remain on the island, along with the final Candidate who replaces Jacob, will perish.

Theory 5: Island Fever
When everyone on the island is finally able to leave, whether via restored Ajira plane or submarine, they will wind up back in Australia (which is "key" according to Hurley). Upon their arrival, they will be treated for various conditions and injected with consciousness and/or memory-altering drugs, financed and administered by either the Dharma Initiative or Widmore Industries.

They will then be booked on Oceanic flight 815, which will take them from Sydney to Los Angeles, and the only side effect in their lives will be an occasional sense of déjà vu.

Lost JackTheory 6: Remember Me
Everyone is experiencing in the flash sideways what Desmond did in 'Flashes Before Your Eyes.' In that pivotal episode, Desmond was looking in the mirror when Penny noticed a spot of red paint on his neck. In the season 6 premiere ('LA X'), Jack was looking in the mirror on Flight 815 when he noticed a spot of blood on his neck. But while Desmond actually remembered his time on the island immediately after flashing back in time (he even referred to it as "a bit of déjà vu"), it has taken his friends a bit longer to remember their island experiences in the sideways world.

After Desmond successfully "shows" everyone their island memories in the sideways world, the island will sink as their collective consciousness anchors them in the their flash sideways lives.

These are only a few of the myriad possibilities for how, when and why the flash sideways world will merge with what we've been watching unfold on the island for six seasons. How will the universe course correct what has happened?

What is your theory as to how the flash sideways will come to an end?
