NBC Sitcom Pairs Patton Oswalt, Matthew Broderick

Patton Oswalt on 'Caprica'What would a sitcom starring Patton Oswalt look like? We may be about to find out. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oswalt has been cast in a new pilot, co-starring Matthew Broderick, called 'Beach Lane.'

The Reporter says Oswalt will be playing a newly-rich newspaper editor who hires Broderick's character, a "renowned journalist,' to try to revive his paper. Kristen Johnston has also been cast as Oswalt's real estate agent step-sister.

Oswalt is one of the most brutally funny stand-up comedians working today. That's not something you would have gotten from watching him on the popular series 'The King of Queens,' on which he played Spence, a meek supporting character. He was a good character actor on that show, but it wasn't a role that would showcase Oswalt's talent.

For 'Beach Lane,' Oswalt will be paired with Paul Simms, who wrote and produced 'The Larry Sanders Show,' 'NewsRadio,' and a couple or episodes of 'The Flight of the Conchords.' So Simms has experience tailoring projects to unique talent. And with 'The Larry Sanders Show,' he was able to make some not particularly likable characters immensely entertaining, and it sounds from the character description that Oswalt's role will fall into that category.

Broderick often plays the nice guy, but it would be fun to see him more in 'Election' mode - not quite so pure of motive, banging heads with Oswalt. Simms is good at that kind of friction, and Oswalt would be a great fit for that. (As a side note, hopefully, this pilot won't spell the end for Oswalt's roles on 'Caprica' and 'United States of Tara.').

This is the most intriguing cast of any sitcom pilot in development right now. And since Lorne Michaels is producing, it would seem 'Beach Lane' will have enough big names to push it past the pilot stage. This should be an eagerly anticipated show, if only to see how all of these people work together.

For an example of Oswalt's range, update your Netflix queue and get "Big Fan" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228953/ Great film!

Patton is awesome. If he has a lot of creative input on the show, the show could be a good one!

Wow, if this show is what the cast makes me think it could be, NBC will cancel it because critical opinion doesn't equal ratings. NBC kills off all their good shows in favor of bad reality and mindless drivel.
