Almost Everyone in Those Verizon Commercials is a Jerk
I say almost everyone, because you know who isn't a jerk in the ads? The cable guy!As I've mentioned here before, the Verizon commercials irritate me. FiOS is great, if you're still using cable TV you're practically a Luddite, yadda, yadda, yadda. But why does the FiOS guy have to be such an annoying jerk?
The cable (Comcast really, as we've now seen in the most recent ads) guy is always trying to talk to the FiOS guy about anything else and all Mr. FiOS can talk about is how great FiOS is, how much faster it is, how everyone loves it, how many J.D. Power awards it has won -- as if tech guy would have one of those in his apartment. While the Comcast guy is also trying to prove how good cable is, you get the feeling he's just trying to get by, not shove cable down everyone's throat.
Here's the latest ad. You tell me what's so irritating about it.
So not only is the FiOS guy a jerk but now we see that FiOS customers are jerks too?
Look at the way this customer treats Mr. Comcast. No hello, no thanks for showing up, no human interaction at all. He just takes the cable box and shoves it in the guy's hand and closes the door in his face. You say the cable guy is a jerk because he slaps an xfinity label on his shirt and tries to immediately sell him on the new service? Hey, at least he's doing his job, silly as the move may be.
This is better than what could have happened. He could have knocked on the door and shoved cable box down the guy's throat. There's your fiber optics, pal.
As past ads have shown us, the FiOS guy and the Comcast guy live in the same apartment building and seem to be on friendly terms, so here's my question: if FiOS is so great and the FiOS guy is so nice, why doesn't he get the cable guy a job at Verizon? The guy is obviously loyal to the people he works for -- even if he did try to check out FiOS in that one commercial -- so why not get him a job there so there won't be anymore tension between them?
I don't think that will ever happen though, since most of their conversations go something like this:
Cable Guy (knocks on door): Hey, can you help me with something? A pipe just burst in my apartment, do you have a wrench I can borrow?
FiOS Guy: In a recent survey, FiOS had 90% more customer satisfaction than Comcast.
Cable Guy: OK...that's great, but I need to fix this pipe. I have a flood starting in my apartment and the landlord is coming over in a few minutes...
FiOS Guy: Do you have 1000 HD titles on-demand like FiOS does?
Sure, the cable guy is goofy and maybe a little irritating in his own way, but you get the feeling that if Mr. FiOS would just ease up on the sales pitch everytime he sees him they'd get along a lot better. I actually have Verizon and it has always been fine, though I'm not going to FiOS anytime soon though. I just wish there would be a commercial entry in this series that would not irritate me so much.
