Bill Simmons Claims TBS Gave Conan "'The Godfather' Treatment"

by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 17th 2010 3:02PM
NBCESPN blogger and former 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' writer Bill Simmons did a podcast in which he discussed the situation with Conan O'Brien and TBS. In it, he claims that TBS gave Conan "an offer he couldn't refuse."

In that regard, he's probably right. TBS offered Conan ownership of the show, a whole lot of money and more creative freedom than he could ever wish for compared to what he would get from any of the networks.

Simmons is also correct in that Conan's 11 P.M. show on a cable channel will put him more in competition with 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' and 'The Colbert Report' than either Letterman or Leno. That's ironic when you consider the sketch the three of them put together during the writer's strike.

While Simmons is correct about all this, we don't appreciate being called "the egghead crowd." Give us some dignity, man. We don't call you "the dumb jock crowd." It would be a cliché.

Bill Simmons is a former writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live and is pretty in tune with all things late night. He does spend alot of time with Kimmel, Corolla and the JKL crew (especially during football season).
Don't pass off his judgments as just a sportswriter opining about TV. He knows his stuff, he broke the Conan being "fired"/Leno back to 11:30pm story about 2 weeks before it became mainstream news.
Just because some jock used to beat you up in high school doesn't mean you have to take pot shots at a sportswriter who knows what he is talking about.

This is not an example of irony. Aren't you a professional writer?

Seriously, how is being called the egghead crowd considered an insult? It's a compliment! Your dig at Simmons is unprovoked and inane, distracting from the main point of the article...his comments which you were in agreement with.

'The Egghead Crowd', as far as I can tell by the way Simmons uses it and what I know about Simmons, is definitely complimentary. When he uses it I see it as referring to the people that are bored with the unbelievably weak writing seen on shows like Leno's. Leno's jokes (particularly in the monologue) are just unoriginal, boring, predictable, and above all unfunny so when Simmons refers to the Egghead crowd as the people that like a little more depth and creativity to the shows they watch, I take it as a compliment and I'm sure he is happy to be associated with this group

Simmons is a pop culture expert and a million times smarter than you.
