What to Watch: April 17-18

by Kim Potts, posted Apr 17th 2010 6:00AM
'Doctor Who' (Sat., 9PM, BBCA) season 5 premiere
It's the debut of the new 'Who,' as in Matt Smith, the previously mostly-unknown actor who replaces David Tennant as the newest driver of the TARDIS. Smith, who actually made his first appearance in the franchise in January's 'The End of Time,' Tennant's last 'Who' hoorah, is the 11th actor to take the lead role, and, at 27, is also the youngest Who ever. But that doesn't mean he gets time to ease into his new gig ... in fact, in the season premiere, he's thrown into a situation where he has just 20 minutes to save the world, and he has to do so without the TARDIS (which was wrecked during the regeneration of Tennant's Who into Smith's Who) and the sonic screwdriver, which has gone "wibbly-wobbly." Good thing he meets his new companion, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), just in time to help him through his pressure-packed journey.'Doctor Who' (Sat., 9PM, BBCA) season 5 premiere

'The Graham Norton Show' – Ricky Gervais, always one of Graham's best guests, pops in to help kick off the new season. (Sat., 10PM, BBCA) season 7 premiere

'Saturday Night Live' – Ryan Phillippe makes his first hosting appearance, and since he's co-starring in the new 'MacGruber' movie, we're guessing he and 'SNL'/'MacGruber' stars Will Forte and Kristen Wiig will give us a preview of coming attractions. (Sat., 11:30PM, NBC)

'Riverworld' – Ha, you saw the title and thought we were suggesting you watch that awful 1995 Kevin Costner flop, didn't you? Nah. That was 'Waterworld.' Alan Cummings stars in this adaptation of Philip Jose Farmer's novel about a group of people who die and then reawaken in a strange place that's covered in water. (Sun., 7PM, SyFy) miniseries premiere

'45th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards' – Lady Antebellum is likely to be the big winner, with seven nods, while the other big showdown at the Vegas kudosfest is the Carrie Underwood vs. Taylor Swift face-off for Entertainer of the Year honors. (Sun., 8PM, CBS)

'Life' – Installments on plants, primates and an hour on the making of special wrap up what is already a classic nature series. (Sun., 8PM, Discovery) miniseries finale

'Desperate Housewives' – 'Torchwood' star John Barrowman guest stars again. That's it. Only reason you need to tune in. (Sun., 9PM, ABC)

'Ultimate Recipe Showdown' – Someone will win a cool $25,000 by cooking up a hot local recipe in this installment on hometown favorites. (Sun., 9PM, Food Network) season 3 finale

'Breaking Bad' – Jesse and Walt's friendship (is that the right word for their complicated relationship?) takes a hit when Gus tries to persuade Walt to get back in the drug-cookin' biz. (Sun., 10PM, AMC)
