ABC Making Tori Spelling the Next Queen of Daytime TV?

Donna Martin graduates ... to daytime TV talk show host?

That's ABC's plan, according to the Los Angeles Times, which reports that ABC is developing a daytime talk-show for 'Beverly Hills, 90210' and 'Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood' star Tori Spelling and a male co-host to be named later.

Though the new series is in the early rounds of development (i.e., there's a chance it'll never even make it to the pilot stage), the Times reports that the network wants to pair Spelling with a "BFF"-type guy, someone who would help her provide a "'Will & Grace' vibe" for the show.

Hmmm ... 'Will & Grace' alum Sean Hayes? Nah, he probably wouldn't do a talk show. Neil Patrick Harris? Ditto. Rupert Everett? Maybe. 'Sex and the City' star Mario Cantone, who does frequent segments on 'The View' and is hilarious? And why do we have a feeling that Perez Hilton has already been on the phone to producers to pitch himself as Spelling's BFF candidate?

The Times suggests that finding a co-host for Spelling could be so entertaining that the search could spark a companion reality show. Indeed.Donna Martin graduates ... to daytime TV talk show host?

As for Spelling, the move to daytime, where she'd be competing with the women of 'The View' and, potentially, a new Julie Chen-hosted talker that's being developed to rival 'The View,' would raise her profile and provide interesting fodder for 'Tori & Dean.' That series, currently in its fifth season on the Oxygen network, is a ratings hit, but this season has shown Spelling and her second husband, actor Dean McDermott, butting heads more frequently than in seasons past.

As for ABC's schedule, adding a daytime talk show host could be a plan to replace Oprah Winfrey's show when she heads to her own cable network (OWN) next year, though network execs may have trouble in convincing its affiliates to accept a new show, as many of them had planned to fill the Oprah vacancy with more local news.

A new talk show could also be trouble for one of the network's daytime soaps. CBS already retired 'Guiding Light' last year, and has scheduled the series finale of 'As the World Turns' for September, and the whole daytime soap genre has been on shaky ground for several years.

ABC currently airs 'General Hospital,' 'One Life to Live' and 'All My Children,' which was forced to move its production from its long-time New York City base to Los Angeles as a cost-cutting move this year.

The biggest question, of course, is whether or not daytime TV watchers want to see a show hosted by Spelling. Would you? And if so, who do you think would make a great co-host for her?

Sounds fun. I love the straight girl, gay guy scenario.
