She then turns to Marshall (Frederick Weller) in the hope of receiving some comfort.

Marshall has a secret crush on Mary that he's afraid to reveal. So he's struck speechless after hearing about the breakup. Still, Mary wants to be diverted from the trouble in her life. "Come on," she says. "Amaze me, annoy me, distract me -- is that so much to ask?"

But he can't do it. Marshall has been made "verbally impotent" by the news. Impotency can be an awkward thing -- but Marshall promises Mary that it will never happen again.
