FX Heads to 'Outlaw Country'

by Scott Harris, posted Apr 27th 2010 10:15AM
Ever since 'The Godfather' became a cultural phenomenon back in the early 70's, organized crime has been a staple of the entertainment industry. From 'The Untouchables' to 'Goodfellas' to 'The Sopranos,' film and television have turned bad guys into big money and big ratings. But besides a life of crime, the characters in those stories all had something else in common: they were all from the North.

Well, not anymore. According to Variety, FX has decided to show the world that Southerners can break the law, too, as they have ordered a pilot for 'Outlaw Country,' a "thriller and family drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime."

Details are still sketchy, but at least one bona fide son of the South will be involved in the series: Shooter Jennings, son of the legendary country star Waylon Jennings and no stranger to Hollywood himself (he played his father in the big screen Johnny Cash biopic 'Walk the Line'), is on board as an executive consultant and music supervisor.Ever since 'The Godfather' became a cultural phenomenon back in the early '70s, organized crime has been a staple of the entertainment industry. Joining Jennings in the executive suite are 'Sons of Anarchy' producers Art Linson and John Linson, while writers Josh Goldin (who wrote and directed the Matthew Broderick vehicle 'Wonderful World') and Rachel Abramowitz (from the entertainment section of the Los Angeles Times) will be providing the story.

No word yet on whether infamous Southern criminal mastermind Boss Hogg will make an appearance, but we have our fingers crossed.
