Is Tuesday 10PM the New Thursday 9PM?
Summer TV programming used to be a wasteland of reruns, reruns and more reruns. Seasons ran from September to May, and that's the way it was and we liked it! OK, we didn't really like it, but it got all the kids outside for the summer. But no more of that nonsense. We'll keep 'em glued to the tube year-round now. Cable networks have been launching new and returning shows in the summer, and it makes sense, because they don't have the tough competition from the broadcast networks. Along with that, though, are seriously competitive timeslots, especially Tuesday at 10PM. If we didn't know better, we'd think it was Thursday at 9PM. You know, 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'The Office,' 'CSI,' 'Fringe,' and 'Supernatural,' among others. That's some serious competition.
Likewise, Tuesday at 10PM is really crowded, with popular and up-and-coming shows like 'The Good Wife,' 'V,' 'Parenthood,' and 'Justified,' and that doesn't look to change in the near future.
Let's look at what's on tap for the Tuesday 10PM timeslot this summer. In July, USA will launch 'Covert Affairs,' an action drama about a young CIA trainee (Piper Perabo) who's unexpectedly promoted to field operative. Offering a good launch pad is the new Tuesday 9PM timeslot for USA's 'White Collar.'
On TNT beginning June 22, Jason Lee stars in 'Memphis Beat' (formerly known as 'Delta Blues'), about a Tennessee cop who lives with his mom and has a connection to the city he patrols. Premiering on A&E July 13 is 'The Glades,' a crime procedural set in Florida. Meanwhile, FX will return with season six of 'Rescue Me' on June 29.
Unlike the diverse mix of the Thursday 9PM timeslot, there's a lot of cop action in the Tuesday 10PM slot. I realize there's a whole lot of science and research that goes into TV viewing habits, but is it a smart move to schedule them all on the same night? Out of shows listed above, which will you watch?
