'Parenthood' - 'Perchance to Dream' Recap

by Jane Boursaw, posted Apr 28th 2010 8:15AM
Parenthood: Perchance to Dream(S01E09) "Get it off me! Get it off!" - Adam, after discovering that the Victoria's Secret bra is his daughter's and not his wife's

Well, I'm totally with Adam on this one. Sure, Haddie could wear the bra -- there's no crime in a girl wanting to feel pretty -- but I wouldn't let her leave the house with her shirt hanging off her shoulder and her bra strap showing. It's not a double standard! Drew didn't have half his underwear showing!

Besides that, Haddie and her boyfriend were making out on his bed (without her bra on, since she took it off in anger before leaving the house!). And, hello?!! Parents shouldn't let teens be alone in a bedroom with the door closed. Ok, I feel slightly better now.

Just when I think I have the relationship between Sarah and Amber pigeonholed (shoot me now), they do something completely sweet and thoughtful, which changes the game. Amber plunking that Berkley catalog down in front of Sarah sort of blew my mind there for a minute. Of course! It's Sarah who wants to go to college, not Amber. Well, maybe Amber does, but she isn't showing much interest at this point. I'm not into pushing kids into college if their hearts aren't in it. Too expensive, for one thing.

But Sarah! After hearing Jim speak at the author's event, it was clear to Amber that her mom was pining for college. And why shouldn't she go? "Why not?" said Amber. "If Jim Kozinsky can get people all hot and bothered by his poetry, then anything is possible. Just don't give up on yourself either, ok?" What a daughter.

Do you think Julia was right to tape off the broken-vase crime scene and force Sydney to tell the truth? Even if it took days? Because it doesn't seem like Joel liked the idea, not after this exchange, when Sydney confessed and asked where the broom was so she could clean it up:

Julia: "Who was that person?"
Joel: "I don't recognize her at all."
Julia: "What is that supposed to mean ... Joel?"

I did have to laugh at the liar/lawyer thing, though. And I thought it was funny that Kristina, Julia and Sarah were all talking over each other while Kristina was figuring out what to wear for the campaign job (not the 'Dynasty' blazer!). After she came back all fired up, I thought it would be cool if she found a part-time job that gave her that sense of purpose she had at campaign headquarters. Not something all-consuming, but something to get her out of the house and doing something different. Contrary to what she says, I think she will regret not taking the job. Or if not that one, another less demanding one.

I'm loving Crosby and Jasmine together, but does it seem like he jumped right into this relationship after nearly starting a family with someone else? And what was up with Jasmine rolling her eyes when Crosby raced off to pick up Jabbar the morning after their night together? Is it because he said, "That was really fun last night"?

Also loved the scene when Adam was teaching Drew how to dance, and then the girls all started dancing, too. "I don't want to toot my own horn, but when I was in high school, people used to call me fever," said Adam. "Saturday Night Fever."

A few more quotes:

"You realize that's insane and dangerous." - Crosby, surveying the broken-vase crime scene
"That's why it's cordoned off, for safety." - Julia

"You want me to go to school with those douches?" - Amber, on the snobby people at the writer's event
"Well, not everybody's gonna be like that." - Sarah

"This is about flowers, right?" - Sarah, on Jim reading his poetry
"I think it might be about your vag." - Amber

"Are you using my poop song to try and make your move?" - Jasmine
"Yeah, what do you think?" - Crosby

"Dad, are you seriously going to keep me here because I'm wearing this stupid bra?" - Haddie
"Of course not, it's a bra, so ... yes, I am." - Adam

"It's because you're my daughter, and you're not wrong ... there IS a double standard. And it's not fair, but then again, neither is the world ... that's the way it is." - Adam to Haddie

"There'll be other campaigns, but our kids are only gonna be kids for so long." - Kristina to Adam

I love this show but you know what kinda sucked? Amber wants Sarah to achieve her dream so she gives her a Berkely catalog. Adam selfishly denies his wife her dream by manipulating her into guilt for even thinking about going back to work. I agree with her decision because she needs to be home with Max but I wish he had let her come to that decision on her own.

Julia has got to be my absolute favorite character. My sister is a month away from being a lawyer and that crime scene was like someone looked into her head, found out how she would treat her future children and acted it out for her to see. It was just so realistic.

Very funny episode. Not sure why a teen would risk ordering a bra by mail when there's plenty of malls around, but it did make for some funny moments.
