'Bones' - 'The Rocker in the Rinse Cycle' Recap

(S05E19) "It's not music. It's rock and roll, baby." - Booth to Brennan
This week's 'Bones' may have had a rock 'n' roll theme since it's "Fox Rocks Week," but the real topic on almost every character's mind was ... sex! Then again, there is a saying that pairs sex and rock 'n' roll together, so it was probably fitting to have both go hand in hand in 'The Rocker in the Rinse Cycle.'
In this episode, Booth and Brennan rocked the place while investigating (see picture above for proof), Cam found a gynecologist for Michelle, while Arastoo compared everything and anything to baseball!
Since the episode was really about sex, let's do the review in a "couples" format.
Booth and Brennan
Brennan is so jealous of Catherine and Booth! She couldn't stop talking about the fact that Booth and Catherine were now in a social contract since she bought him a tie and that "I prefer to be alone" speech she told to Cam was so untrue. Brennan may be of the solitary type, but it's crystal clear to everyone but her that she should be with Booth.
Nonetheless, Brennan continues to date Hacker, which is fun to watch unfold. Even if Hacker was nowhere to be seen, the aftermath of his romantic gestures was felt at the end of the episode when Brennan mentioned to Booth that Hacker gave her a mix CD of songs he enjoyed. This offered us a funny scene in which Brennan not only said that she didn't like much Led Zeppelin songs, but that she turned down tickets to one of their concerts!!! Say what?!? Seeley "Rock 'n' Roll" Booth was not pleased with Brennan's decision. How she could not think of giving him the tickets instead of refusing them!? Simple, if Brennan didn't like Led Zeppelin, she probably thought that no one else in her entourage did! How could they like such a group?
Speaking of Brennan and rock 'n' roll, one of her best lines of the episode was definitely when she said that the word "groupies" was not accurate enough and that we should use "groupers" instead.
Cam and Dr. Lidner
Having only seen Elon Gold in action when he acted as a judge on 'The Next Best Thing: Who Is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator?' I must say I was a little scared of his portrayal of Dr. Lidner when I've heard a few weeks ago that he landed a multi-episode arc on the show. I must admit that Gold was not that bad as Dr. Lidner. His character and Cam were actually rather cute in the park scene where they talk about bad past experiences. It's about time that Cam gets some lovin', don't you think?
This storyline also showed us how the relationship between Cam and Michelle matured. Even if Cam is still a little uneasy around Michelle, especially since she is turning into a woman, which means losing her virginity soon, it's nice to see Cam make an effort to connect with Michelle and insure she'll be safe, informed, and will grow to become a healthy adult. In return, Michelle seems to now fully accept Cam as a mother. It was very mature of Michelle to tell Cam that she should date Dr. Lidner as she needed to think of herself, too.
I don't know about you, but I enjoy seeing the lives of the squints, so seeing Cam try to find a gynecologist for Michelle, go on a date, and interact with Michelle, was a welcome storyline. Let's hope the show keeps sprinkling backstory for our favorite characters here and there in the episodes.
Hodgins and Angela
The couple came a little closer to giving their relationship another chance when Hodgins told Angela that it was so hot that she was able to discover what the weapon of the week was. Hodgins may have quickly changed the word "hot" to someone else, but you could sense he totally meant "hot" and that it came naturally to him. Can we expect them to go on a date by the end of the season?
Arastoo and baseball
Some of the squints of the week are really fun. Arastoo is one of my favorites. This week, he not only bonded with Hodgins over baseball, but he compared everything and anything to baseball, which had Brennan react in, well, a very Brennan way. My favorite was when she told Arastoo what she thought Sweets would say about baseball: that the need to hit balls with a large bat is probably to compensate for insecurities! I don't think Sweets would dare say that about baseball.
Other tidbits of interest
- "She is a good girl, so she isn't having sex." - Booth about Michelle having sex. Booth needs to open his eyes soon as his son will get to that age too, sooner than he thinks! Being good doesn't mean you won't have sex at 16.
- "This is not an eyeball." - Cam holding a male body part. Poor Booth, who couldn't stand the ladies mentioning sexual body parts! How else could they talk about the body when some of the biggest clues came from these body parts?!
- "Our victim was beaten to death by a quarter of a million dollar." - Angela. Her ZZ Top father would have been really proud of her this week for using her rock 'n' roll knowledge to solve the case. Too bad he didn't appear in the episode.
- Brennan doesn't know who Kurt Cobain was? I get that she is very work-focused, but are we to assume that she never read a newspaper and never heard his name before? Angela needs to get Brennan with the program and have her study up on pop culture, stat!
Only three episodes left this season! Next week: An episode penned by the creator of Temperance Brennan, Kathy Reichs.
