'Red Faction' Movie Coming to Syfy

by Chris Jordan, posted Apr 29th 2010 6:00PM
It's game on at Syfy.

'Red Faction,' the popular first-person shooter, is getting a two-hour movie treatment from Syfy that could lead to a series, according to a report in Broadcasting & Cable.

The movie is part of an effort by the NBC Universal-owned Syfy to delve deeper into gaming culture via a collaboration with 'Red Faction' publisher, THQ. The venture also seems likely to produce a kids' show based the 'de Blob' Nintendo Wii game.

"It is the kind of content that fits our genre,'' said Alan Seiffert, senior vice president of Syfy Ventures, of 'Red Faction' "It is a great fit for a big Syfy Saturday movie, and if it really works, it is a great back-door pilot.''

The storyline of 'Red Faction,' released in 2001, follows events on Mars in the year 2075 when humans are mining the Red Planet for its minerals. Conditions are so deplorable for the Mars miners that they begin a revolution.

THQ will look to develop gamer versions of two Syfy shows, 'Ghost Hunters Academy' and 'Battlestar Galactica' and the new Syfy Games section of Syfy.com will be revamped as part of the collaboration.

The U.S. video game market is $20 billion industry, according to the report. Game-to-TV hits to this point have been mostly kids games, including 'Sonic the Hedgehog' and 'Pokemon.'

Well, if they can make it without turning the film into a cheesy mess then it might actually be something interesting to watch. A rarity on the Syfy.
