'Survivor' Exit Interview: Big Girls Do Cry

by Audrey Fine, posted Apr 30th 2010 4:02PM
You can't teach an old dog new tricks -- especially when they're playing 'Survivor.' Last night's episode of 'Heroes vs. Villains' proved that old axiom beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Candice Woodcock, taking a page from her 'Cook Islands' playbook, flipped on her Heroes tribe. Meanwhile, Russell Hantz, spurred on by Parvati Shallow's secretiveness, summoned another immunity idol into his meaty little paws and Amanda Kimmel did what Amanda Kimmel always does -- played nice.

Guess what doesn't get you a million bucks? Playing nice.

To her credit, Amanda did try to play mean -- for a few seconds anyway -- she just wasn't very good at it. After winning a reward challenge, she, Colby Donaldson and Danielle DiLorenzo lounged on a bed watching a movie in Robert Louis Stevenson's Samoa home. Danielle found a clue to a hidden immunity idol hidden in the popcorn bowl, but Amanda caught on and snatched it.

A G-rated cat fight ensued with Colby looking up from the movie only long enough to admonish his tribe mate Amanda and instruct her to return the clue to Danielle. The kicker? Amanda did as she was told. Big mistake. Huge.

Back at camp, Danielle and her cohorts set out to uncover the idol and (newsflash!) Russell found it in a matter of minutes -- but, still seething from Parvati's sneakiness, decided to keep it to himself.

When Jerri Manthey won her first-ever individual immunity by stacking cards higher and more quickly than anyone else, the eight other survivors jockeyed for position and the usual pre-Tribal Council mayhem ensued. Would Candice flip? Yes. Would Sandra? No. Would Russell get paranoid and play the idol? Yes. Would Amanda regret not having wrestled Danielle to the ground for the clue? Oh, hella yeah.

So, how does three-peater Amanda, a 24 year-old former tour guide from Kalispell, Mont., feel about having had her torch snuffed for the first time in her 'Survivor' career?

Last night during your exit interview, you said "I made too many mistakes and when you do, you get booted." Besides not having fought Danielle to the death for the clue, what was your biggest mistake?

I did badly in the card stacking immunity challenge, I just wasn't thinking properly. And, I almost found the hidden immunity idol that JT [Thomas] ended up finding. I was right there and just missed it. That could've changed the entire course of the game. I just made a bunch of little mistakes and missteps and when you do, they add up and lead to your demise.

Did the catfight between you and Danielle get more heated than what we saw on TV? It seemed to end so abruptly.

It did. I actually got kind of vicious. She was cussing me out and calling me "crazy" and pulling my hair -- just getting her claws out. Colby's going to be mad at me for saying this but I wish that he'd gotten involved and helped. For him to just sit there and watch the movie -- it wasn't even good -- was annoying. [He should've realized] that what happened to me was going to effect him!

How did you realize that Danielle had found a clue? She tried to be so discreet about it.

I was looking for one the whole time. All throughout the tour and dinner, they'd even given me the bowl of popcorn first -- I should've found it. I don't know how I missed it. But, I was watching her the whole time; I was going to make sure that she didn't find it before me. Then, I saw her throw something on the floor and I didn't know whether I should call her out on it or just go and grab it.

Out of your three seasons, this is the first time that you're not a finalist, so it was your first time at "The Ponderosa" jury camp. What did you do when you got there?

I was really exhausted from playing the game; it's really hard on your body and your mind. I was so happy to be there with this awesome personal chef they had cooking for us. I remember we had a great meal with an awesome chocolate fondue! All of them [other jury members] were so sweet when I got there saying things like "Amanda, we were rooting for you."

I am friends with Courtney [Yates] in real life so it was fun to hang out with her.

What was the luxury item that you to get from winning that challenge a while back?

I brought drawing paper and pencil. It's what JT used to write the note to Russell when we gave him the idol.

Who is cooler than they seem on TV?

Colby is really cool. He is such a gentleman. I think part of his problem out there is that he was such a gentleman with the food, he'd always make sure that the girls got to eat first and had enough that I don't think he ate enough -- he has a lot of muscle and not enough body fat and I think it affected him. He's the sweetest guy ever.

You've done 'Survivor' three times and have said that you're finished with it. Any interest in any other reality show?

I'd love to do 'Dancing with the Stars.' I love to dance -- did it a lot as a kid. Jazz, ballet and tap.

In the meantime, are you still a hiking guide?

No. I'm really passionate about organic food and skin care and actually have been working on three organic fragrances called 'Wild.' They're coming out soon.

OK, I have to ask you the question all the other castaways have responded to. You're driving cross country with your tribe. Who gets shotgun, who's in the back seat and who's relegated to the trunk?

I'm driving, James is shotgun. And, let's just say that the trunk is full.

Russell has spent the whole show thinking he's in charge? He probably has a wife who lets him think that too. He's very lucky, if he's running an oil company, that's he's dealing almost exclusively with men, because what he doesn't know about women could fill several libraries.

I was hoping Amanda would run in the bathroom, read the clue, then flush it. Why hand it over just because you are told to?

Amanda's insane for thinking that Colby should have helped her out. How would he look on national television getting involved in a girl fight over an object called the "hidden immunity idol" ??

Am I the only person who thinks the producers keep giving that potential homonid Russell all these immunity idols?

seriously, again you allude to who goes home less than 24 hours after an episode airs. please in the future, for those who read via RSS put any txt after a SPOILER tags and make your headlines less informational. I'd hate to have to stop reading TVSquad, i find it is one of my favorite blogs but this is getting really frustrating.

Once the shows over - there are no surprises. If you are reading something about Survivor on Friday you should already know they are going to be talking about who got evicted. There is no reason to put a spoiler alert in the title.

Keep up the good job Audrey
